ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Led by the Tom Brady (San Mateo, Calif./Serra HS) to Tai Streets (Matteson, Ill./Thornton Township HS) passing combination, the University of Michigan football team rallied from an early 7-0 deficit to defeat Indiana 21-10 on Saturday (Oct. 24) before a U-M Homecoming record crowd of 110,863 at Michigan Stadium.
A junior quarterback, Brady threw for 210 yards, while senior wide receiver Streets collected two touchdown receptions and 117 yards in catches as Michigan upped its record to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in Big Ten Conference play. Indiana dropped to 3-4 (1-3 Big Ten) despite 110 yards rushing from quarterback Antwaan Randle El.
The Hoosiers led 7-0 after one period on a Chris Gall one-yard touchdown run. Gall's run capped a 41-yard, eight-play drive the first time the Hoosiers touched the ball. It was also the first touchdown for a Wolverine opponent in 10 quarters.
The Wolverines' offense started to gel in the second quarter as Michigan had a four-minute drive that ended with an interception in the end zone by freshman safety Greg Yeldell on a tailback option pass from Walter Cross (Fort Washington, Md./Oxon Hill HS). It was one of three Yeldell interceptions on Saturday as Indiana moved its total to 16 for the season.
Michigan's defense held Indiana to a three-and-out, and junior Marcus Knight (Sylacauga, Ala./Comer HS) returned a punt 10 yards to set up the Wolverines at IU's 37-yard line with 3:20 left on the first-half clock. Brady led Michigan on a 37-yard, seven-play touchdown drive as he completed three passes and the Wolverines ran four times, with sophomore tailback Anthony Thomas (Winnfield, La./Winfield HS) converting the touchdown from two yards out and sending the teams into the halftime break tied 7-7.
The Wolverines snapped the tie on its second possession of the second half as Brady connected with Streets on a 51-yard scoring pass. The drive covered 43 yards in three plays and took 1:25 off the clock. The touchdown marked the fourth consecutive game in which Streets has scored on a pass from Brady, and the Streets-Brady combination provided the winning margin for the second straight week.
Indiana scored its final points -- the first points allowed by the Wolverines in the second half of a Big Ten game this season -- in the third quarter. Indiana junior tailback Frankie Franklin highlighted the drive with a 59-yard rush, setting up redshirt sophomore placekicker Andy Payne's 31-yard field goal that cut Michigan's lead to 14-10 with 5:11 left in the third quarter. Indiana's drive covered 67 yards on six plays and took just over three minutes.
The Michigan offense then took control of the game, grinding out an 88-yard, 19-play drive that took almost 10 minutes (9:56). Brady mixed in 13 rushes and six passes in the scoring drive and hit Streets on a four-yard scoring pass on third-and-goal. Brady had the highlight play in the drive, running 16 yards for a first down on third-and-nine from U-M's 44.
Brady completed 18-of-27 attempts for 210 yards, his third 200-yard passing day of the season. It also marked the first multiple-touchdown pass day for the first-year starter, who has thrown at least one touchdown pass in six consecutive games.
Streets had his second eight-catch game of the season for a season-high total of 117 yards. It was the fifth game in his career with over 100 yards receiving, and he now has 14 career touchdowns catches.
Michigan's defense stopped Indiana on three drives in the final 10 minutes of play, with junior linebacker Dhani Jones (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill HS) breaking up a fourth-and-13 pass on Michigan's 36-yard line with 6:05 to play. Sophomore free safety DeWayne Patmon (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry HS) intercepted Randle El at the Michigan 42 with 2:56 to play, and on the final IU drive junior linebacker Ian Gold (Belleville, Mich./Belleville HS) tackled Randle El at Indiana's 39 after a five-yard gain on fourth-and-15 and U-M took over with 1:06 on the clock. Patmon's interception was his team-leading third of the season and fourth of his career.
