Red Berenson

A two-time all-American at Michigan, Red Berenson became the first hockey player to jump directly from the collegiate ranks into the National Hockey League. While at Michigan, Berenson led the Wolverines and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in scoring two consecutive years. He compiled a total of 78 goals and 59 assists to rank among Michigan's all-time scoring leaders and was named league MVP in 1962. After an illustrious 15-year professional career, he served in many NHL coaching capacities, including earning NHL coach of year in 1981. Berenson took over a struggling Michigan hockey program in 1984, and he gradually created a NCAA powerhouse. Berenson directed Michigan to the 1996 and 1998 NCAA national championships -- the eighth and ninth in school history -- and has become one of the most iconic figures in the history of college hockey.
