Melanie Weaver Barnett set a standard as the quintessential Michigan female student-athlete. She successfully balanced academics and athletics and was vital to establishing the women’s track and field and cross country teams’ tradition of success. As the 1982 Big Ten Conference indoor champion in the 10,000-meter run, Weaver Barnett set the school record (33:06.70) and Ferry Field record (33:57.66) in that event. Michigan’s first female All-America distance runner, she earned the distinction twice: in the two-mile run in 1982 and the 10,000-meter in 1983. Weaver Barnett’s academics mirrored her athletic achievements in merit and precedent. As the 1983 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient, she became U-M’s first female student-athlete to earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. She graduated with her MBA in 1991. In 1993, she was chosen for the Gerald R. Ford award, the highest honor given to a U-M student-athlete.Â
