Henry Hatch

For 42 years, Henry Hatch committed his life to Michigan athletics as the equipment manager for all of the University's sports programs. In the days before staffs of managers catered to the needs of the coaches and athletes, Hatch was the man who made sure everything was in order. Henry Hatch was at every Michigan home game from 1919 until his death in 1964, and he traveled with the team to every game starting in 1931. He accepted the equipment manager position in 1922, eventually serving under seven football head coaches, including Fielding H. Yost, Fritz Crisler and Bennie Oosterbaan. Perhaps Hatch's most favorite responsibility, a task that went beyond painting the scoreboards and repairing any damaged equipment, was handling and painting the scores on the famed Little Brown Jug -- the trophy that goes to the annual winner of the Minnesota-Michigan game. Hatch was beloved by the athletes and coaches on campus.
