Dick Degener
- Induction:
- 1980
- Class:
- 1934
Famous for his tight spins and grace, Dick Degener was one of the greatest divers in the world in the 1930s. The Detroit Central High School graduate won back-to-back NCAA championships on three-meter springboard in 1933 and 1934. In Big Ten competition, he was even more dominant, sweeping that event at the conference championships during his three years as a varsity letterman -- 1932-34. He also was dominant on the international stage. Degener won the springboard Bronze Medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1932 and then captured the gold medal four years later at the Games of the XI Olympiad in Berlin. His Olympic diving coach Dick Papenguth called Degener “the greatest of all divers.”
