Michigan's golf team had put together a dynasty between 1932-36, winning five Big Ten titles and two national championships. John Fischer had been the fuel for this fire between 1932-34, but it was Chuck Kocsis who kept the Wolverines rolling into the mid-1930s. Kocsis had already built up an impressive resume before his days at U-M, edging Tommy Armour by a stroke to claim the 1930 Michigan Open championship. The Detroit native made an immediate impact at Michigan, where he won individual medalist honors at the Big Ten Championships in 1934 with his four-round total of 283. He followed this performance with a runner-up finish at the NCAA championship in Cleveland, Ohio. As a senior in 1936, Kocsis once again claimed the Western Conference title, which he had given up to teammate Fischer in 1935. His first round of 65 led to a medal-winning total of 286. At the NCAA championship, Kocsis claimed the individual title he had finished just short of two years earlier.
