Al Renfrew came to the Michigan hockey program from Toronto, Canada, and in four years he scored a remarkable 172 points for the Wolverines. He captained the 1949 team and was a member of one of the highest scoring line in Michigan history. Â Renfrew tallied four goals to beat Minnesota for the Big Ten title and was a member the first Michigan team to capture the NCAA hockey title. After he graduated, he played professional hockey for a short period, but college hockey was still his first love. His coaching career began at Michigan Tech where he turned the program from a 2-18 team his first year into an NCAA finalist within five years. In 1958, he returned to Ann Arbor as head coach, and for the next 16 years he led the Wolverines to 222 victories. Â Among those victories were five Big Ten titles, one WCHA crown and the 1964 NCAA crown.
