Coach Brian Smith on Jaylen Kelly-Powell
"Jaylen had a very good high school career, and he is one of those guys that can come in right away and contribute. He's got good technique, and he is especially good in man-to-man. He's a blitzer and a hard-worker, and he's really a great kid. He is very serious and a great student, and I love his attitude and approach to the game. He is going to be something special in the years to come.
"His dad is a coach; he's been around the game and has been all over the country working with different DB coaches, learning different techniques. Jaylen is a football junkie-- that kind of kid. He fits our scheme well because he played a lot of man-to-man in high school so he's done it before. He fits into what we do very well."
In the words of the Kelly-Powell Family
"First and foremost, Jaylen's family and extended family are very proud of him. He is a very humble and selfless person. Jaylen takes the time to help others. One of our best memories of Jaylen is one from his years as a Pop Warner little league player for the Detroit Dolphins. Jaylen played running back on offense all his years but one. That year, the team was having issues with the center on the offensive line. He decided to go play center and did so without any problems. That team went on to win the state championship and represented the Midwest for Pop Warner. This selflessness that Jaylen showed has carried over for the rest of his career.
"He has always given back to the younger players and made sacrifices to help his teammates. In high school, his defensive teammates would call him Coach JKP because he was a student of the game and would always be there to help his brothers."
