Michigan Roster and Bios for 2022 Winter Olympics

Seven individuals with ties to the University of Michigan, including four current ice hockey student-athletes, are headed to Beijing, China, for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Together they represent two countries: United States (5) and Canada (2).
U-M has four representatives on the USA men's ice hockey team, with sophomores Matty Beniers and Brendan Brisson joined by former Wolverines Steven Kampfer and Strauss Mann. Canada's roster includes Michigan sophomore Owen Power, while classmate Kent Johnson has been elevated to the active roster after initially being selected as an alternate.
Ice dancer Evan Bates is four-time Olympian, having competed previously for Team USA in 2010 (Vancouver, Canada), 2014 (Sochi, Russia) and 2018 (PyeongChang, South Korea).

Resume: Beniers won a bronze medal as a member of the 2021 U.S. World Championship team before being selected No. 2 overall in the NHL Draft by the Seattle Kraken. He was named alternate captain of the U.S. World Junior Team this year, one year after capturing a gold medal at the event. An alternate captain at Michigan, Beniers recently hit 60 points in his career with 26 goals and 34 assists in 52 games. He leads U-M in power-play goals (eight) and points (36) this season after sharing the team lead in goals (10) as a freshman.

Resume: Brisson won a gold medal at the 2021 World Junior Championship with Team USA. A first-round selection of the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2020 NHL Draft, Brisson is the top goal-scorer for Michigan and tied for third nationally with 17 tallies through Jan. 29. He is second on the team in points with 32, ranking him ninth in the nation. Brisson also is tied for first in the nation in game-winning goals with five. As a freshman in 2020-21, he shared the U-M team lead with 10 goals and ranked fourth in scoring with 21 points.

Resume: A Stanley Cup champion with Boston in 2010-11, Kampfer signed with the Bruins after his senior season at Michigan, where he helped the Wolverines to two CCHA championships (2008, '10). Kampfer also spent time with the Minnesota Wild, Florida Panthers and New York Rangers during his 10-year NHL stint, playing 231 games. Now in his first season with Ak Bars Kazan in the Kontinental Hockey League, he gained selected to the KHL All-Star team and ranked third on the team in scoring (30 points) through 46 games.

Resume: The Big Ten Goaltender of the Year in 2019-20, Mann is playing for Skelleftea in the Swedish Hockey League and leads the league in goals-against average (1.99) and save percentage (.927). At Michigan, Mann was a finalist for the Mike Richter Award and a two-time All-Big Ten selection. Team captain in 2020-21, he was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and finished his Michigan career with 35 wins, 11 shutouts, 1,970 saves and four assists. He owns the single-season school records for GAA and save percentage.

Resume: Selected by Buffalo as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, Power won a gold medal with Canada at the IIHF World Championship last summer. He also was a member of this year's World Junior team. A nominee for the Hobey Baker Award, Power led all defensemen in the nation in scoring with 26 points in 24 games through Jan. 24 and was tied for eighth with a +21 on-ice rating. In 2020-21 he earned All-Big Ten second team and All-Freshman Team honors after leading U-M in blocked shots with 40.

Resume: Johnson, taken No. 5 overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2021 NHL Draft, was a member of Canada's 2021-22 World Junior team. As of Jan. 24, he led the nation in assists with 24 and had six goals to sit 10th in the country with 30 points. With a +21 rating, Johnson was tied with Owen Power for eighth in the nation. He was a Big Ten All-Freshman Team selection in 2020-21 after finishing second on the team in scoring with 27 points on nine goals and 18 assists in 26 games.

Resume: Beijing will mark Bates' historic fourth appearance at the Olympics, making him U-M's first four-time Winter Olympian. He and partner Madison Chock finished ninth at the PyeongChang Games in 2018 after placing eighth at the Sochi Games in 2014, and he took 11th at Vancouver in 2010 with fellow U-M student Emily Samuelson. Bates and Chock are three-time U.S. champions (2015, '20, '22) and own two World Championships medals, earning silver in 2015 and bronze in 2016.
