Michigan Cheer Team Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the time commitment like?
A: We practice on average 12-14 hours per week throughout the entire year with two hours of strength and conditioning each week. In addition to practice time, we are at every home football and basketball games. We also perform at various other athletic events, performances, and pep rallies.
Q: Does the team practice in the summer?
A: No. We do attend NCA College Cheer team camp in early August and sometime we will practice a few days before camp. The team also practices twice a day for 7-10 days before classes starts.
Q: How many members do you take on the team?
A: Our roster size is around 40 members - approximately 20 male athletes and 20 female athletes.
Q: What if I want to try out for the team but I cannot make it to the Spring evaluations?
A: We have two tryout evaluation periods. One is Spring for the upcoming season. The other is mid-September after classes begin.
Q: Does the Michigan Cheer Team compete?
A: Yes, every year we attend the NCA College National Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida in April each year. The Michigan Cheer Team has won national championships in several divisions in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021 and 2022.
Q: What if I've never had cheer experience?
A: Most of our female athletes have cheer experience or have been competitive gymnasts. Our male athletes rarely have cheer experience, but come to our program with athletic experience in virtually every other sport such as football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, lacrosse etc.
