About the Michigan Cheer Team
The Michigan Cheer Team has a proud and storied history within the University of Michigan Athletic Department. What began in 1892 with a few male "yell masters" expanded to include women in 1974 and has since evolved into the coed team we are today. Our commitment to being the Leaders and Best has remained constant through the decades.
You'll find us energizing fans at home football, men's and women's basketball games and events across campus, rallying support for Michigan's athletic teams. Our team spirit extends far beyond Ann Arbor -- we travel to regular-season away football games, Big Ten basketball tournaments and postseason events for football and both men's and women's basketball, proudly shouting "Go Blue!" from coast to coast.
Community service is a vital part of our mission. Cheer Team members actively support charitable causes and participate in service projects throughout the year.
Our dedication continues off the sidelines. Between practices, strength training, and academic commitments, our student-athletes maintain a full and demanding schedule, all with the support of Michigan Athletics. Just a few of our majors are nursing, engineering, pre-law, pre-med school, business, kinesiology, architecture and STAMPS.
While our season begins with football in the fall and extends through basketball in the winter, it culminates each spring in Daytona Beach, Fla. When the lights go out on football and basketball season, the spotlight is focused on the Michigan Cheer Team at the National Cheerleaders Association College Championship. Since 2013, the Michigan Cheer Team has earned 11 national championships, proudly representing the block M on the national stage.
