CONSTRUCTED: 2002
DEDICATED: Aug. 31, 2002
The 22,000-square-foot facility, made possible by a $3.5 million gift from Donald R. Shepherd, a Michigan alumnus, is the practice and training home of the Michigan women's gymnastics program. The state-of-the-art complex, opened in 2002, has 17,000 square feet of training area which is outfitted with the latest in gymnastics training equipment, including resi- and free-foam pits for each event. There is an additional 5,000 square feet which houses a training room, offices for the coaching staff, a locker room, a team lounge, and a study area for the student-athletes.
In 2024 the Training Room within the Shepherd Training Facility was named after longtime Athletic Trainer Lisa Hass. The training room was also upgraded to hold two hydroworx above ground recovery tubs. Each tub is dedicated to either hot or cold. The hot tub is kept at 104 degrees where the cold tub is kept at a chilly 50 degrees. The training room also has treatment tables, taping tables, TRX equipment, and a nutrition station for the team.
The facility is located off State Street near Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center and offers a panoramic view of the outdoor tennis courts, the U-M Golf Course and the city of Ann Arbor through the large wall of windows on the building's north side.
In 2021 the Michigan Gymnastics program joined an exclusive club, becoming just the seventh school ever to capture an NCAA women's gymnastics title, and the Wolverines did it with the third-best score in NCAA Championships history. Head coach Bev Plocki's squad posted the best team score in program history, 198.250, to edge out Oklahoma (198.1625) for the crown. This is the first National Championship for the Michigan Gymnastics Program.
Women's gymnastics home competitions are held at the 12,707-seat Crisler Center, which is also home to the U-M men's and women's basketball teams.
