Well, Michigan takes a tough one today against Iowa. They drop it twenty to nineteen. We'll continue to break this down. You're going to hear from Jason Avant, Doug Karsh, Brian Boesch and the entire team. This is in the Trenches.
Jeff Laurence • 00:14
Welcome to the official podcast of Michigan Football in the Trenches with Jon Jansen, presented by Meijer, presenting sponsor of the twenty twenty six Michigan football season and proud supporter of hundreds of local sports teams across the Midwest. Nobody covers Michigan football better than the two captain, national champion and Michigan athletics Hall of honor inductee.
Kyle Whittingham • 00:36
You gotta live with it, you gotta own it, and, you know, better. Come back tomorrow ready to go to work and play the next one. That's how this business is.
Jeff Laurence • 00:45
This is in the Trenches presented by Meijer. Once again, here's Jon Jansen.
Jon Jansen • 00:51
At this time, I'm going to throw it to my partner, Brian Boesch.
Brian Boesch • 00:53
John. Just shocking. It's tough to comprehend in the moment when you lose on the last play of the game.
Jon Jansen • 00:59
It is. And when, when you take the game in total and the fact that up until that moment, Michigan had marched up and down the field, they just didn't capitalize in the red zone, you know, converting on some third downs there at the end of the game, just being able to keep the possession of the ball. There's just so much there that if it just goes the other way and, you know, tipped passes like I meant, I made the comment in the middle of the game when we were talking about, you know, different things that could go wrong and that ball's not round and there were two tip passes there that were very instrumental in Iowa being able to score their last two touchdowns.
Brian Boesch • 01:37
And the shame is, obviously a lot will be replayed of that final play and final drive. But Michigan had ample opportunities to pull away. Not to, to blow out Iowa, but they had a chance to make it to where it would have had to have been a lot harder than a pretty hard spot. Ninety one yards to go with one timeout in less than two minutes left. You tip your cap to Iowa. But it's one that is probably going to be a tough film watch for this team in the coming days.
Jon Jansen • 02:02
Well, yeah, this one's going to stink for a long time. That's a game that, that should have been in Michigan's favor. And ultimately, you know, it doesn't matter what the stats say. You heard coach talk about it. It all comes down to the only one that matters, and that's the score. And they ended up with one more than we had. And, you know, there it's not all, you know, dark. It, it obviously is dark because you lost the game, but you think about the progress that the offense has made, that at the beginning of the game, after having some of those penalties set back that opening drive, you come back and it was the best drive that we have had all season long. Eighty nine yards. And you saw Bryce be on the move, make some good decisions. There's, there's a lot of things that you can look at and say, hey, there's some positives. But when you have, when you lose the turnover battle and Brian, you have that stat, I think it's what now seventy eight and five.
Brian Boesch • 02:51
Seventy eight and five. Under Phil Parker, the defensive coordinator for Iowa since twenty twelve. Iowa seventy eight and five. When they win the turnover battle.
Jon Jansen • 02:58
And it seems at the time like it's inconsequential because you put Iowa back inside the five yard line and defense comes out three and out you get the ball back to fifty. All right, hey, we dodged a bullet. But it's the points that you don't get. It's the field goal. It's, it's, you know, it's the momentum shift at that time and it really didn't feel like a whole lot of momentum shift because the Iowa offense had struggled. But you've got to play. If there's anything we've learned throughout the course of this entire season is you got to play every second of the game. And it just came up that in. In favor of Iowa.
Brian Boesch • 03:34
Yeah. And, and the shame of it is from the offensive side, I think you saw stretches of this game where you could really believe where this offense can go. And that, that means that Michigan has the ability to make up for this, to salvage this terrible feeling and, and move forward in a positive way. Despite a very daunting schedule, four hundred twenty nine yards of total offense is impressive, but if you don't finish off drives, if you don't take care of, of avoiding penalties and, and finding way they had a three and out when they could have run out the clock. The shame of it is they were so close to thinking, man, this offense has a chance to take off. And now you're with this terrible taste in your mouth.
Jon Jansen • 04:11
Yeah. And it's, it's even more than that. It's.
Jon Jansen • 04:14
Yeah. As an offensive player, you're looking at it going, well, if we had just picked up a first down, if we had punched that ball out and done something better, whether it's a better block up front, a better play call, there's so many Things that, that, that, that are variables in that. But then even at that where you pin them inside their ten yard line with no timeouts and you extend a drive where they, they did enough to, to beat themselves. It was third and seven and they jump off sides. Now it's third and twelve and you let them out because of a personal, because of a selfish decision out of bounds where you've already made the play and you don't have to make that hit out of bounds. It's just those are the moments where you go back and, and you just, you extend that drive. You allow them to stay in the game. You allow them the opportunity to score points where you could have just got them off the field.
Brian Boesch • 05:08
Much was made after the Western Michigan game about the players only meeting. Trey Pierce called that the captains all led. How do you bounce back from a game like this where you did in a lot of ways not the most important. Again, credit Iowa. They deserve to win the game because they found a way with some big time plays late. But, but this was different than the Western game. Western did a lot more things right in a vacuum than Michigan. Michigan won the ball game. How do you bounce back from this with now a spot where you are owing one in the Big Ten and it only gets more challenging with some of the folks on the schedule moving forward and just how difficult this league can be week in and week out?
Jon Jansen • 05:45
Well, you got to hone in on the details. And offensively you line up right. Like you can't have pre snap penalties, you can't jump off sides, you can't have, you can't hit somebody out of bounds. Like those are all things that are what drive coaches and fans absolutely nuts because you feel like you got something going and then you shoot yourself in the foot. And it's all the details and it, some of them are very recognizable. Like don't throw an interception. And when you do have an opportunity to pick off a ball because there were many times where Michigan had their hand on the ball, they could have made some turnovers and just simply didn't. You know, you've got to be able to hone in on the details so that when you're in a position like this, in a, in a tough battle that you finish in the red zone, you come away with three points at a minimum. Or you, you put the ball in the end zone.
Jon Jansen • 06:34
Like you can't continue to do this and think that nineteen points is going to be enough against anybody in the Big Ten.
[transitional wipe]
Brian Boesch • 06:42
Doug, your thoughts after the lowest of low, you can have in a moment where you need one stop at the sixteen yard line, we'll get into how we got there. But this moment, this play could define the season.
Doug Karsch • 06:56
Well, Michigan's won a game on the last play and now they've lost a game on the last play. And you know, credit Iowa, credit Hank Brown. That Iowa offense did very little through three quarters. They stuck with their game plan, they got some stuff going and they had two fourth quarter drives for touchdowns after doing being held to less than one hundred yards through three quarters. They finished the game with two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter which credit them. But that last play, back shoulder throw and Smith Snowden was there. It's unfortunate but they made the play. They made the play. So congratulations to them. But Michigan has a lot to look in the mirror and talk about.
Brian Boesch • 07:38
Well, that's the thing. Penalties, eight for seventy five and extending one and you can argue how significant it was. But Zeke Berry made contact after a play. That cannot happen. There were pre snap penalties, there were issues. The irony is that Iowa could have gone for it on fourth and inches. They commit a penalty. But Michigan committed way too many in this ball game again and they had some opportunities elsewhere but boy that, that seems to really loom large in this ball game.
Doug Karsch • 08:06
Well, we could talk a lot about the penalties in, in the penalty that extended that Iowa drive. They were looking at a fourth and twelve. But a personal foul laid hit gave Iowa first down. And you know that's, that's looking in the mirror. That's a mistake that just can't happen and it can't happen from a senior. And additionally Michigan had an alignment penalty where they had a third and short and it got to be third and long because they were aligned improperly. And so bottom line here is his Michigan team, the Michigan offense look like and Bryce looked like he took a step forward. Maybe they got a little conservative early, but they were, they were relying on their strength, which is their defense. And their defense had been tremendous throughout the day. And if you told every Michigan fan ninety one yards to defend, minute and a half to go, one timeout, you would take that opportunity ten times out of ten against this Iowa offense.
Doug Karsch • 09:00
But again, credit Iowa. But I think, I think they're going to be kicking themselves in that locker room thinking about what they did to cost themselves this football game.
Brian Boesch • 09:10
If you'd have told me before the game that Michigan would gain four hundred and twenty nine yards of offense, I most certainly would have taken it too. But he had a fifty nine yard drive that ended In a field goal, A sixty two yard drive that ended on a failed fourth and short attempt, a forty five yard drive that ended with an interception, a forty three yard drive that ended with a field goal. Those types of things, again, one in a vacuum you can bounce back from. But there were several times that Michigan had a chance to, to establish itself as the team that was going to not pull away, but seize control of this game. And it never got there.
Doug Karsch • 09:45
Yeah, and I mean, if you talk about things that are costly, giving up a ninety nine yard kick return doesn't help. Special teams have made a difference in this series. I can think of all kinds of times Michigan and Iowa played going back to Rob Houghtlin and Mike Gillette and Iowa one on a walk off field going Iowa City early in the Harbaugh era. And now that kick return was a big part of this game. Iowa did nothing in the first half offensively, but again, you got to credit them for the plays they made in the fourth quarter. But Kyle Whittingham told us he wants to keep the penalties under fifty yards a game and they weren't able to do that today. And there were some costly ones in there. And especially on that last drive, I just think they got to be kicking themselves. And look, you got to create your own breaks. They had two tip passes on both their touchdown drives.
Doug Karsch • 10:33
Iowa caught them both and so they created that break. Iowa gets their first win in Michigan Stadium since twenty ten when they beat Michigan thirty eight to twenty eight. Now, I wouldn't give up on this Michigan team, sure, because there's a lot of correctable stuff. But this is a low point right now and we'll see what they're made of.
Brian Boesch • 10:53
Yeah, I mean it was an odd low point with a win against Western Michigan. And the reality is with how this all plays out, you lose a Big Ten game like this, you put yourself now into a really tough spot. This if rankings hold, which they won't, but Iowa is the first of five ranked teams Michigan will encounter. They have to get better and they have to be able to pull off close games because let's face it, they've played three games that the final play has been decided. A Hail Mary for Michigan, a sack of Jon Mattier that the clock bleeded out, and then a walk off touchdown for Iowa. They'll be in close games again the rest of the year. They need to execute better and they need to find ways. They need to win those close ones against these good teams down the stretch.
Doug Karsch • 11:34
And they just, they got to bring it all together offensively. Like if you take a look at, you know, the mistakes, the penalties they make offensively, the interception, that was Michigan, whether or not Bryce was looking for a back shoulder there on that one inside the five. But those two red zone trips that netted no points were huge. The fourth down where Bryce came up short and the, the interception. Now Bryce looks better, he looks more in command. They got him on the roll. They rolled him out today. They did some good things. That kind of gets all lost in the wash because of the way the football game ended and they still, you know, only scored nineteen points. But at the end of the day, Brian, there's a lot that they got to clean up. Their margin for error is not so big that they can make that many mistakes. Additionally, this Iowa team has got two games now.
Doug Karsch • 12:23
Next they got Ohio State and Iowa City, which is going to be a huge game next Saturday. Then they go to Washington. And if they win one of those two, you look at their schedule the rest of the way. They don't play anybody else, any of the big boys in the Big Ten. They don't play Oregon, they don't play Penn State, they don't play USC. If they're good enough to win two of the three against Michigan, Ohio State and Washington, they might find themselves in the playoff. And, and, and Michigan, you know, that's a goal. But now at three and one, they got work to do.
Brian Boesch • 12:51
Yep. And no team has won more games in the playoff era without making the playoff than Iowa. And they have a chance. No doubt this one will be a signature moment no matter what. Now it's a matter of if Michigan will be able to bounce back.
Doug Karsch • 13:03
A lot of work to do, huh?
[transitional wipe]
Brian Boesch • 13:04
Chris, how did you process everything we saw not just that final play, but that last drive where there were several off ramps where Michigan could have found a way and Iowa just kept pushing forward. A little help from Michigan and then the walk off touchdown.
Chris Wormley • 13:19
The great teams and the great defenses when they are they have the opportunity to finish a game or put to put the game to bed. They do that. And Michigan's defense had played so well all game long and just at that last drive, they drive ninety one yards and they could have finished it on two or three different plays and just couldn't find a way to do it. That was the biggest thing for me
Brian Boesch • 13:37
in that last drive for this offense. A lot to like until there's a lot to work on. So many missed opportunities to turn scoreless drives into field goals, to score, to turn field goal drives into Touchdowns. Just, just a really frustrating game because there were signs that this offense was really finding a way.
Chris Wormley • 14:00
There were plenty of signs. Receivers go for one hundred yards. Bryce looked more comfortable. You know, even from last week in the pocket, they're making plays. The running game seemed to get going a little bit. The tight ends got invol a little bit. But then when you have those penalties, the pre snap obviously the big personal foul there at the on the sidelines to continue that drive, these things continue to add up. And no matter what you do well on as a team, those penalties are always going to kind of erase all those good things that you did. And we saw that in this game.
Brian Boesch • 14:31
So Michigan falls zero one in the Big Ten now, three and one in the league. Or sorry, three and one overall. Oh, and one in the league. And you know, this is the type of game that because of the way Michigan schedule lays out, I mean there is such a skinny path now for Michigan, Big Ten wise because they still have four more ranked teams to face in this spot. Really, really difficult. But you know, you're going to hear you've been through tough losses. You got to bounce back. How does a team do that after something like this?
Chris Wormley • 15:03
They have to go back to work, they have to watch the film tomorrow. They have to get their bodies right because this Big Ten season is going to be long and physically demanding. But then also you have to have a conversation with yourself first and foremost in terms of all these penalties that this team is having because of, because of all the things that they've done well these last two weeks. It's those penalties that are still costing them big moments and potentially they cost them this game.
Brian Boesch • 15:26
Yeah, tough one no doubt. Twenty to nineteen as Iowa gets the win over Michigan. I know it was in a losing effort, but it was great to have you aboard with us this week. Pinch hitting for Jack Miller. Excited to see you continue to climb in this industry and hope you get to work together again soon.
Chris Wormley • 15:42
It was an amazing experience. Thank you to you and your team and thanks for Jack for having a wedding and go blue.
[transitional wipe]
Brian Boesch • 15:49
Always tough to describe, tough to break down. But we appreciate the radio crew for doing so. After Iowa shocks Michigan twenty nineteen on the final play of the game, we'll get some of the thoughts from the Michigan locker room. This one might be relevant here after this type of a ball game, but we do want to shout out our friends Susan and Will Braymer. Artisanal and award winning wines from one hundred percent Leelanau grapes have made Laurentide winery a Michigan Favorite. They're founded by Susan and Will U of M alums and they are proud to be family owned since twenty ten and grateful to be part of your celebrations, dinners and game day traditions. Visit the tasting room in Lake Leelanau or purchase online at Laurentide winery dot com they are hurting just as much as you are. If you're listening to this, after this one, they bleed maize and blue.
Brian Boesch • 16:34
So if you need a little help after a tough one, be sure to raise your wine glass with Laurentide online at laurentidewinery dot com all right, let's hear from the head coach, Kyle Whittingham. He was with Jon Jansen shortly after the game.
Jon Jansen • 16:47
Coach, I know it's a tough one. What was the message to the team after the game?
Kyle Whittingham • 16:50
Well, you're right, it's a tough one to swallow. And proud of the way our guys played as far as their intensity and the energy and the passion. Just needed to make one more play there, that final drive and we just weren't able to do it and credit them for putting the drive together and the one they needed to win the game. And you know, it was very lopsided statistically, but that doesn't matter. I mean, the final score is all that matters. But thought the offense, you know, moved the ball up and down the field. We didn't finish in the red zone like we needed to and defense weren't able to generate any takeaways. So if you're looking for things that could have been better, starting with those two and then the penalties again, we had another rough day, penalty wise and really costly one on that last drive that really gave him a spark. But, you know, you gotta live with it, you gotta own it and, you know, gotta come back tomorrow ready to go to work and play the next one.
Kyle Whittingham • 17:47
That's how this business is.
Jon Jansen • 17:48
For the most part of the game, it felt like it was Bryce's best game. What did you see from him as leading this offense through most of the game?
Kyle Whittingham • 17:55
Yeah, he was seeing things very well this afternoon. Made a lot of good throws. You know, he's seemingly getting better every week. I mean, that's my opinion and my observation. And ran the ball pretty effectively, you know, ran tough and secured the football when he did run. So yeah, he was. He's a guy that, in my opinion, took another step forward.
Jon Jansen • 18:20
Special teams are so important and early on in the game they had the one that was returned for a touchdown. Was there anything that you saw in that? The breakdown. And I also also follow up on that. Most of the kickoffs have been touchbacks. Was that a different philosophy you guys entered the game with today?
Kyle Whittingham • 18:35
Absolutely not. We're trying to kick every ball out of the back of the end zone and we just miss, hit a couple. And that was a key play to the game, obviously for them early on to keep them right there with us and keep the score tight. And that just can't happen. I mean, you coach it and coach it and do your best, but obviously we got to coach it better because it did happen. And, and, but no, the kick was not supposed to be fieldable. Now the next one was we kicked a sky kick to try to slow that return down. So that was the design there. But all the rest of them, we would prefer to kick him out of the end zone.
Jon Jansen • 19:11
In the second quarter, you guys had a fourth and one, a fourth and short. What goes into the process of making the decision as to whether you kick the field goal or you go for it? Which you decided to go for it.
Kyle Whittingham • 19:21
That was an easy decision. Fourth and one from right there. I think the analytics book had it go all the way to fourth and three. And so that was a no brainer. I mean, that's something that didn't require, you know, any hesitation and we didn't get it. So obviously it turned out to be a bad result. But bad result doesn't mean it was a bad decision.
Jon Jansen • 19:39
Going for it the last two minutes of the game, what's the message to the defense as they take the field with the lead?
Kyle Whittingham • 19:45
Well, you gotta make a stop and get the ball back and end it. And, you know, prior to that, it would have been nice if we could have, you know, ran the clock out. Offensively, we weren't able to make a first down on that last series offensively, so that, that would have definitely helped our cause. And then when we got the punt off and pinned them way back, I don't know where we had them pinned at. It was deep and, you know, we just got to find a way to make a play. They had one timeout and, you know, eighty or ninety yards to go and just under a couple minutes and we gotta, we just gotta. We gotta be better, Gotta coach better.
Brian Boesch • 20:17

Here's Bryce Underwood.
Jason Avant • 20:57
Bryce, devastating loss. How you feeling?
Bryce Underwood • 21:01
Not the best. We just got to come back Monday, ready to work. They had a the play. The game came down to one play. They made the play when it came down to that. So congrats to them.
Jason Avant • 21:11
Tell me some things that you learned in this ball game. With Iowa's defense being ranked number, seem like you guys moved the ball pretty efficiently.
Bryce Underwood • 21:19
The things I learned throughout this game, no matter what, but play with energy and passion no matter what the circumstances. That's one of the main things I learned from this game.
Jason Avant • 21:29
When it came down to the last few plays in the ball game offensively, what was trying to be accomplished in sustaining drives, the goal in the mindset
Bryce Underwood • 21:41
was for us to end with the ball in our hand. So I think it's obviously got to do better with that. I mean, that was the main goal. I mean. Yeah.
Jason Avant • 21:49
How can this downtime for you turn into a good time? And learning the lessons going forward, just
Bryce Underwood • 21:55
going over film, seeing everything that we missed. They're moving forward from there.
Jason Avant • 22:00
Thank you.
Bryce Underwood • 22:00
No problem. Appreciate it.
Brian Boesch • 22:02
Staying on the offensive side, Jason visited with Evan Link.
Jason Avant • 22:05
Just overall feelings. This is a tough game to swallow.
Evan Link • 22:08
Yeah. I mean, tough loss, especially when we control the ball well on offense, I'd say. And our defense is playing great to have it come down to the end like that. Not the outcome everybody wanted. And definitely got some things to work on and I know we're going to attack that in the coming weeks. So definitely tough loss. But I think we got some things we can improve on and we're going to do that. So looking forward to the coming weeks.
Jason Avant • 22:29
When it came to moving the Iowa defense in front, it seemed like you guys had a really good game plan. Can you express the game plan that you guys had in order to run the ball effectively?
Evan Link • 22:39
Yeah, I really think it just came down to, I mean, you know, Iowa's going to play stout, good defense, well disciplined. They're a great team. Right. And for us, it really just had to be beat them at their own game in a way. Right. Be more physical, be lower than them, move your feet better than them and be more assignment sound. And that's really what we try to do today. And I think we did a good job at times. Obviously didn't do it as bad as we could have as seen as a result. But I mean, we control the line of scrimmage for the most of the game. I think it's because of those things.
Jason Avant • 23:06
Like I said, there is. We talked about that week after week about penalties. Seemed like that was an Achilles heel again today. How do you guys address those going forward?
Evan Link • 23:19
I mean, I think we just have to be smarter about what we're doing on the field. I know some of these penalties, it's cost playing football, right? You're going to get a hold here and there just because blocker doesn't know where the ball is, right? But I think a few of them we're just not necessary and we can improve on that and I know we will. But I mean, like I said, you can't play penalty ball against a guy with a team like Iowa because they're not going to commit that many of their own. And when you give it to them like that, you're giving them a game. You know what I mean? So we got to be better there.
Jason Avant • 23:48
Pass pro was pretty much outstanding today. You guys gave Bryce enough time to read the field. He was able to move the pocket. Talk about that and how you guys executed.
Evan Link • 24:00
I mean, like I said, this whole week was very fundamental focus, at least for the O line, right? Especially like I said in the run game, right? Being low, running our feet, being assignment sound and that translated, I think that was the same thing in the past game as well, right? We knew who these guys were going to be. They're strong, they're good rushers. If you let them beat you, they're going to beat you, right?
Brian Boesch • 24:18
But if we play with good technique
Evan Link • 24:19
and good fundamentals, like we were coach too, and like we practiced all week, we're going to do well. And I think we did a good job of that today.
Jason Avant • 24:24
All the best going forward.
Evan Link • 24:25
Thank you. Appreciate it.
Brian Boesch • 24:26
Last offensive player to chat with the always willing to talk. Zach Marshall.
Jason Avant • 24:30
Devastating loss. Tim, how you feeling?
Zack Marshall • 24:33
If you're a competitor, you're hurting. We're all hurting right now. Just because we felt like we did everything we needed to. We controlled the ball, moved the ball. We did everything on offense that they were saying we couldn't do. On defense, we played lights out. I mean, we did everything. Sadly, this game's about points, not about who gets more yards. So they got one more point than us and they won the game. Even though it doesn't seem fair.
Jason Avant • 25:05
What's the lesson that's learned from this type of a loss going forward?
Zack Marshall • 25:10
Never, never leave it up to the refs. Never, never leave it up to it being close. Gotta just keep the gas pedal on. That's about it. Don't let it be close because crazy stuff happens.
Jason Avant • 25:24
There was a special team touchdown giving up in this game on a kickoff return. How do you prevent those type of plays?
Zack Marshall • 25:35
Just effort, energy and trust in your assignment. Trust in the guy next to you. Not trying to make too many, not trying to make anybody else's play. So, I mean, we had under one hundred yards in the first half. I want to say it was like, it's crazy that they got one on special teams. I mean, we knew they were going to be a good special teams unit for a damn good special teams unit. So we needed just. You just got to trust the guy next to you and make your play.
Jason Avant • 26:01
So all the best moving forward.
Zack Marshall • 26:03
Appreciate you indeed.
Brian Boesch • 26:04
We appreciate those three and two defenders as well. Enow Etta's thoughts with Jason Avant.
Jason Avant • 26:10
You know, I know this is a tough loss for you. Tell me how you feeling. The process and all this, I mean,
Enow Etta • 26:21
we just gotta, you know, get back to the drawing board. I mean, ain't much to say. I mean, we just gotta get back to the drawing board, see what we can do. Better come back next week. Gonna want to know next week. Can't hang our heads, you know, you know, we got to be ready to go. You know, we can't soak. No reason to soak. We just got to build on what the good we did and, you know, you know, the bad we did, the, the stuff that we did that wasn't good enough. You know, we got to X that out and continue building as a team and, you know, still early in the season. So we just got to keep building and we can't let this bring us down too much. But yeah, it's definitely a learning experience for sure.

What did Iowa do when it came to that last drive? Did they do anything different that you guys saw that was, you know, hard to adjust to up front?
Enow Etta • 27:10
No, no, we just gotta, we just gotta execute. We just gotta execute consistently throughout the whole game. We just gotta execute. That's it. You know, no matter what they throw at us, we just gotta execute.
Jason Avant • 27:23
Thank you.
Enow Etta • 27:23
Appreciate it.

And lastly, the three time captain, here's Rod Moore junior With Jason, you've seen
Jason Avant • 27:29
a lot of games. How do you describe this one?
Rod Moore Jr. • 27:33
I think I just describe it as being yourself. I mean, Iowa is a Good team. But a lot of the outcome was really we beat ourselves. And I'm kind of taking this one hard because I could have capitalized the game or ended the game at one point. You gotta make the plays.
Jason Avant • 27:50
What did they do as far as the adjustments in the second half that caused them to get an end zone a few times?
Rod Moore Jr. • 27:56
A lot of that, like I said, was on ourselves. We blew a couple coverages and we had some penalties. We didn't get off the field. So I didn't think really it was our adjustments, their adjustments. It was just us not executing who we were supposed to.
Jason Avant • 28:12
When it comes to special team touchdown. Is there something that you can say as a leader to kind of encourage those guys that don't kick off before the game?
Rod Moore Jr. • 28:22
We kind of said this was. That was the main thing with special teams because, you know, coach Kirk over there, he takes a big. Takes a big. A lot with special teams and then we do as well. But, I mean, it was going to be a special teams battle. And, you know, I know about a couple years ago, someone told me that if you lose a special teams battle, you're going to lose the game. And that's what kind of happened.
Jason Avant • 28:41
All the best moving forward.
Rod Moore Jr. • 28:42
Appreciate it.

No beating around the bush. It's a heartbreaker. Michigan falls twenty nineteen to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Thanks to all those players in particular for being able to do that. It is not easy after games like that. Thanks to Coach Whittingham. Thanks to Chris Wormley for helping out with Jack Miller out for the weekend. Appreciate Doug, Jon, Jason, our good friends Tony Butler and Rob Joyce for all that they do to make Michigan on the radio and on the podcast, possible. I'm Brian Boesch. Michigan falls to Iowa 20-19. Thanks for listening and go blue.
