COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and three of the first four singles matches en route to a 4-1 win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Friday (April 24) at the Auer Tennis Complex and Ty Tucker Tennis Center. The match began outdoors and finished indoors due to darkness.
Michigan started fast, winning the doubles point by dropping just three total games across the three matches. U-M won the first 12 games played, taking 4-0 leads on all three courts at the same time.
Reese Miller and Laura Rahnel were first off court, winning 6-1 at No. 2 after jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Emily Sartz-Lunde and Piper Charney followed moments later with an identical 6-1 win at No. 3 to stake Michigan to a 1-0 lead.
U-M took five first sets in singles action, highlighted by Miller's 7-3 tiebreak win at No. 3 after falling into a 3-0 hole in the opening set.
The teams moved indoors at 7 p.m., an hour and 40 minutes after the match began. Following a brief warmup, play resumed at 7:19 p.m.
Wisconsin pulled level with the Wolverines behind a straight-set win at No. 1.
Lily Jones put Michigan's second point on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 2. She broke at 5-3 in the first set and closed it out in the next game on her serve. The second set was tied at 3-3 before moving indoors, with Jones winning three of the next four games to seal the win.
Rahnel recovered from early breaks in both sets at No. 6, winning 6-4, 6-4 to stretch the Michigan lead to 3-1. Down 3-1 in the first set, she dropped just one more game the rest of the way. Rahnel trailed 2-0 in the second and was down a break at 2-3 when play moved indoors, but she again lost just one more game, breaking Karolina Jacobson in the final game on a double fault on the deuce point.
Sartz-Lunde clinched the match for the Maize and Blue with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 5. She trailed 5-2 in the second set before winning five straight games to avoid a tiebreaker and secure the deciding point.
