ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The seniors of the University of Michigan men's tennis team capped their final home match with a 4-1 win over Indiana on Sunday (April 19) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines closed the regular season on a six-match win streak, with the Big Ten Tournament beginning Wednesday.
Michigan (13-9, 8-5 Big Ten) secured the doubles point with the deciding match coming at No. 3, where Mert Oral and Nicholas Steiglehner delivered. The duo broke on the deuce point to take a 4-2 lead before Indiana evened it at 5-5. The Wolverines responded with another break and held serve to win 7-5.
Bjorn Swenson and Alex Cairo added a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, while Max Dahlin and Pierce Shaya fell 6-4 at No. 1.
Swenson won his final home singles match in dominant fashion, defeating Michael Andre at No. 2. The No. 45-ranked Swenson closed the first set by winning five straight games for a 6-1 decision and swept the second set, 6-0. It marked his sixth consecutive singles win as he improved to 19-7 on the season.
No. 6-ranked Max Dahlin extended his singles win streak to 16 matches with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 victory over Sam Landau. Dahlin remained perfect in tiebreakers at 10-0 and continued to lead the nation with the longest active streak.
Nicholas Steiglehner clinched the match for the Wolverines at No. 4. Tied at 2-2 in the first set, he won four straight games to take it 6-2. In the second, Steiglehner broke Facundo Yunis for a 6-5 lead and served it out for a 7-5 win.
Indiana's lone point came via a default at No. 5 singles.
The Big Ten Tournament begins Wednesday (April 22) at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif. Michigan's seed and opponent will be determined following the conclusion of conference play.
