CARY, N.C. -- Piper Charney of the University of Michigan women's tennis team punched her ticket to the 2025 NCAA Singles Championship by reaching the final of the consolation draw at the 2025 ITA All-American Championships on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 28) at Cary Tennis Park. U-M competed throughout the week, placing four singles players and two doubles teams in the main draw.
Charney will play in the NCAA Singles Championship for the second straight season after earning one of 10 berths available at this tournament. She fed into the consolation draw after falling in the main-draw round of 16 on Friday (Sept. 26), then won three straight in the backdraw, securing the NCAA berth with her semifinal victory.
After winning her first consolation match on Saturday morning (Sept. 27) indoors, Charney rallied to defeat No. 28 Aysegul Mert (Georgia), 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, winning eight of the final nine games.
In Sunday's semifinal (Sept. 28), Charney cruised through the first set before a late break decided the second. Down 3-1 in the third, she won two straight games to get back on serve, held to a tiebreaker, then built a 5-1 lead. After four missed match points at 6-2, she steadied and forced two miscues to close out a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (6) win.
Joining Charney in the main-draw singles were Lily Jones, Emily Sartz-Lunde and Reese Miller. Miller won two qualifying matches to reach the main draw, while Jones and Sartz-Lunde earned spots via ranking. Jones dropped her opener, won three consolation matches and fell in the round of 16. Miller went 0-2 in the main draw. Sartz-Lunde finished 1-2 after winning her first match and dropping the next two.
In doubles, Charney and Sartz-Lunde qualified into the main draw but went 0-2 there. Jones and Jessica Bernales won their main-draw opener before bowing out in the next round for a 1-1 record.
Michigan continues fall action next weekend (Oct. 2-4) at the MSU Invite in East Lansing.
