
Michigan Hockey Ties Program Record with Seven NHL Draft Selections

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team had six selections in rounds 2-7 during day two of the 2025 NHL Draft on Saturday (June 28). The Wolverines have a streak of 30 consecutive years with an NHL draft pick, and now have 194 all-time draft picks, including Will Horcoff who was selected in the first round on Friday (June 27).
The Wolverines' seven selections in this draft tie the program record set in 1990 and repeated in 2007, 2015 and 2021. All six selected Saturday will be incoming freshmen for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
Malcolm Spence | New York Rangers | 2nd Round, 43rd overall
Spence spent the last three seasons with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, serving as alternate captain the past two years. A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Spence finished in the top three in scoring all three years, finishing his major junior career with 177 points in 195 games. During the 2024-25 season, he averaged 1.12 points per game, tallying 32 goals and 41 assists in 65 games while chipping in another nine points during the playoffs. He was selected to the 2024 CHL-USA Prospects Challenge, where he finished with three points in the two-game series. The left-handed winger won gold with Hockey Canada at both the 2024 U18 World Championship and the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, averaging a 1.00 per game in each tournament. The 2021-21 Greater Toronto Hockey League Player of the Year previously played for the Mississauga Senators and was drafted second overall in the 2022 OHL Draft.
Cole McKinney | San Jose Sharks | 2nd Round, 53rd overall
A six-time medalist with USA Hockey, McKinney has extensive international experience, including a bronze medal from last month's U18 World Championship. He is averaging 1.12 points per game internationally, with 29 points in 26 games. The right-handed shot also has two bronze medals from the 2024 and 2025 U18 Five Nations, a gold medal from the 2024 U17 Five Nations and a silver medal at the 2023 World U17 Hockey Challenge. A native of Lake Forest, Ill., McKinney has spent the last two seasons with the USNTDP and totaled 27 goals and 33 assists in 58 games this past season. He was selected for and competed in both the 2025 USA Hockey All-America Game, tallying one assist, and in the 2024 CHL-USA Prospects challenge where he had two assists in two games. McKinney previously played for the Chicago Mission, winning the national championship with the U14 in 2022.
Jack Ivankovic | Nashville Predators | 2nd Round, 58th overall
A five-time gold medalist with Hockey Canada, Ivankovic was named the Best Goaltender at the 2025 U18 World Championship with a .956 save percentage and a 0.99 goals-against average. In addition to back-to-back gold medals at the U18 Worlds, he won gold at the World Junior Championship, as well as the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the 2023 World U17 Hockey Challenge. He played two seasons with the Brampton Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League, posting a 39-17 record with a .907 save percentage. As a rookie, he captured the F.W. "Dinty" Moore Trophy, given to the league's best first-year goaltender while being named to the OHL All-Rookie team. After a 14-5-4 rookie season, the Mississauga, Ontario, native posted a 25-12-5 record in 43 regular-season games with 1,173 saves for a .903 save percentage. The left-handed catcher was the seventh overall and first goaltender drafted in the 2023 OHL Draft.
Drew Schock | Anaheim Ducks | 4th Round, 101st overall
A second-generation Michigan hockey player, Schock led all Americans at the 2025 U18 World Championship with seven points, while serving as alternate captain. A member of the USNTDP for the last two seasons, Schock appeared in 66 games this past season, tallying 37 points, and had 18 points during this tenure on the U17 squad in 2023-24. At the 2025 USA Hockey All-American Game, Schock collected an assist and had two assists at the 2024 CHL-USA Prospects Challenge. A left-handed defenseman, Schock won a gold medal at the 2024 U17 Five Nations, a silver at the 2023 World U17 Hockey Challenge and added another two bronze medals at consecutive U18 Five Nations in 2024 and 2025. Schock's father, Harold, won a national championship with the Wolverines when he played for Red Berenson from 1993-97.
Asher Barnett | Edmonton Oilers | 5th Round, 131st overall
Barnett captained Team USA team to a bronze medal at the U18 World Championship last month. He tallied six points in seven games to capture his fifth international medal after winning consecutive bronze medals at the last two U18 Five Nations, a gold at the U17 Five Nations and a silver medal at the 2023 World U17 Hockey Challenge. A left-handed defenseman, Barnett played two seasons with the USNTDP putting up 22 points last season. He played in both the 2025 USA Hockey All-America Game and the 2024 CHL-USA Prospects Challenge. A native of Wilmette, Ill., Barnett is a 2020 Illinois State Champion with the Chicago Mission.
Aidan Park | Edmonton Oilers | 7th Round, 233rd overall
Park has played three years with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL, leading the league in power-play goals (16) during the 2024-25 season, as he earned second-team All-USHL honors. The righty finished second on the Gamblers in scoring this season with 66 points, scoring 33 goals and 33 assists in 55 regular-season games. Following the end of the Gamblers' season, Park signed with the Calgary Hitmen for the WHL playoffs as an affiliate player. He also played two seasons for Shattuck St. Mary's Prep, totaling 93 points in 56 games. During his senior year in 2023-24, he finished sixth in the league in scoring. A native of Playa Vista, Calif., Park previously played for the Los Angeles Junior Kings.
