COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With a 227 54-hole total, redshirt-sophomore Mara Janess of the University of Michigan women's golf team tied for 41st on Wednesday (May 7) at the NCAA Columbus Regional from the OSU Golf Club's Scarlet Course. With her finish, she did not advance to the NCAA Finals, completing the season for the Maize and Blue.
In her final round, she birdied the 10th hole for the second time in three rounds before a pair of bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12 pushed her to one-over. A second birdie on the 17th (par 3, 160 yards) helped her turn even. She rattled off six straight pars to start the front nine before two bogeys on her final three holes gave her a 74 (+2).
Bookending rounds of 74 around a 79, she tallied a 227 regional total to tie for 41st. One of the six individuals invited to Columbus, Janess posted the third-best regional total among them.
In the opening round (Monday, May 5) in her second NCAA postseason appearance, Janess set a personal best, going a perfect 18-for-18 in greens in regulation and adding 14 pars to open with a 74 (+2) to tie for 35th.
On Tuesday (May 6), rain, wind and cold conditions saw the 66-golfer field average four strokes higher than the previous day. Battling through the conditions, Janess managed a pair of birdies and eight pars to post a 79 and close the round tied for 45th (153).
In team competition, Kansas used a final-round 276 (-12) to win the regional at 858 (-6), while Arkansas was second at 861 (-3). Host Ohio State (865), UNLV (868) and LSU (886) rounded out the list of teams moving on to the NCAA Finals.
Kansas' Lyla Louderbaugh won medalist honors with a 204 (-12; 69-70-65), earning an eight-shot victory. Houston's Moa Svedenskiold used a 214 (-2; 71-72-71) to finish fifth and move on to the championships as the individual.
