ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped just one singles set in a 7-0 shutout victory over No. 21-ranked Florida on Tuesday evening (Feb. 4) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
U-M took the early lead, winning the doubles point behind victories at No. 3 and No. 1.
At No. 3, Michigan's pair of Lily Jones and Ava Bruno breezed to a 6-2 win. In their first time together as a duo, the Wolverines broke on a deuce point on a Bruno winner at the net for a 2-1 lead. That ignited a three-game run for the Maize and Blue, as U-M went up two breaks at 4-1. Florida got one of them back in the next game, but the Wolverines won the final two games to pick up the win.
U-M's No. 1 pair of Piper Charney and Jessica Bernales clinched the match's first point, winning 7-5 at the top of the lineup. The two teams exchanged breaks in the early going, but neither could consolidate to take the advantage. U-M grabbed a trio of match points at 5-4, but the Gators fought off all three. Following a Michigan hold, the Wolverines again held three match points on Florida's serve. U-M converted on the ensuing point, putting the first point on the board for the home team.
Michigan took all six first sets in singles action, highlighted by a pair of 6-0 wins from Emily Sartz-Lunde and Reese Miller.
Sartz-Lunde pushed the Michigan lead to 2-0, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5. She raced out to a 40-0 lead in the final game, converting on the deuce point to wrap up the straight-set victory.
Miller followed with the third point of the day for the Maize and Blue behind a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 5 to move her winning streak to six.
Jones did the honors for Michigan, rallying from a 4-1 deficit in the first set for a 6-4, 6-1 win. She ripped off five straight games to close the first set and won the first four in the second set to take control.
With the team match in hand, Bernales, Julia Fliegner and Charney all emerged victorious in the 7-0 shutout win.
