ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind multiple 7-0 runs and a dominant performance from freshman Syla Swords, the University of Michigan women's basketball team never trailed in a 78-68 win on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22) at Crisler Center.
The win marked Michigan's 10th Big Ten victory of the season, the 13th time Michigan has hit double digits in conference action.
Michigan had four players in double figures, led by 24 points and six rebounds from Swords. Jordan Hobbs hit four triples en route to 18 points, with Olivia Olson turning in 12 and Greta Kampschroeder with 10. U-M held a 36-35 advantage on the glass and scored 18 points off 17 Lady Lion turnovers.
Michigan struck first with a Hobbs triple on the opening possession off an offensive rebound from Kampschroeder. Michigan led by as many as seven points in the first quarter, taking an 18-14 lead after 10 minutes behind a pair of triples each from Swords and Hobbs.
U-M opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run, taking a 28-16 lead behind a Te'Yala Delfosse bucket on the block at the 6:45 mark of the quarter. The Lady Lions closed within seven, 34-27, with just under two minutes remaining. Olson found Yulia Grabovskaia on Michigan's final possession, sending Michigan to the half with a 36-27 lead.
Penn State trimmed the Michigan lead to six twice in the opening minutes of the third quarter before U-M scored seven straight to force a PSU timeout with 6:25 to go and the lead at 45-32. Hobbs scored five straight, with Olson capping the spurt with a turnaround jumper.
Michigan's lead swelled to 15 on a layup from Swords, but Penn State slowly climbed back into the contest. PSU got within six on a triple with 1:19 left, but Delfosse grabbed an offensive rebound and found Swords for a corner triple to give U-M a nine-point cushion entering the fourth.
The Wolverines continued to extend their lead in the fourth quarter, taking a 69-53 advantage and forcing a PSU stoppage with 4:41 remaining. Michigan's lead never dipped below double digits the rest of the way as the Wolverines held the lead for all but 14 seconds of game time.
