Wolverines Hold Maryland to Negative Hitting Percentage in Sweep

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Behind a strong defensive showing, the University of Michigan volleyball team swept Maryland (25-18, 25-10, 25-15) on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 9) at the Stephen M. Schanwald Pavilion at XFINITY Center.
Michigan (17-8, 7-7 Big Ten) limited Maryland to a -.011 hitting percentage behind nine blocks and 34 digs. Serena Nyambio posted six kills on 10 swings, while Jenna Hanes added five kills and five blocks. Allison Jacobs led the Wolverines with eight kills and eight digs. Morgan Burke paced the offense with 16 assists and two aces, while Camille Edwards added eight assists and five digs. Maddi Cuchran anchored the backcourt with eight digs. Michigan served 10 aces in total, led by Hanes with three and Burke and Ella Demetrician with two apiece.
Maryland (8-16, 1-13 Big Ten) scored the opening point before Michigan answered with a 3-0 run featuring two blocks from Nyambio. A kill from Jacobs and an ace from Cuchran extended the lead to 6-2, and Hanes' kill at 10-4 forced an early Maryland timeout. The Terrapins cut the margin to 12-8, but back-to-back aces from Burke pushed U-M ahead again. Maryland stayed within reach late, but a kill from Lydia Johnson and an ace from Hanes sealed the 25-18 first-set win.
The Wolverines dominated the second set from start to finish, jumping out to a 6-1 lead behind Demetrician's kill and ace. Michigan stretched the advantage to 13-6 and later 17-6 following Hanes' third ace of the match. The Wolverines ended the set on a 5-0 run, highlighted by kills from Hanes and Jacobs, to win 25-10 and take a two-set lead.
In the third, Nyambio opened with a kill, and Michigan never trailed. The Wolverines built a 7-2 lead to force a Maryland timeout, then extended it with a 6-0 run capped by blocks from Hanes. Michigan continued to roll, pushing the margin to 22-13 after an ace from Edwards. Jacobs delivered a kill to reach set point before a Maryland error ended the match, giving Michigan the 25-15 win and the sweep.
The Wolverines return home to start rivalry weekend against Ohio State on Friday (Nov. 14) at 7 p.m. in Crisler Center. The match will stream live on B1G+.
