ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fourteen Wolverines recorded points on Saturday evening (Nov. 22) as the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team rolled to an 8-1 win over Ohio State for a weekend sweep and a milestone victory for the program.
Michigan (13-3, 6-2 Big Ten) used the offensive outburst to secure its 100th all-time win over Ohio State (5-7, 1-5 Big Ten), extending U-M's lead in the historic rivalry to 100-53-16 through 169 meetings.
Mississauga native Jack Ivankovic delivered another standout performance, earning his 13th victory of the season with a career-high 38 saves on 39 shots.
Senior winger Josh Eernisse continued his strong stretch by opening the scoring at 9:01, redirecting a point shot from freshman Asher Barnett. Junior forward Garrett Schifsky added the secondary assist on Eernisse's second goal of the weekend.
Michigan doubled its advantage at 14:07 when senior Kienan Draper fired a shot from the right circle that beat the goaltender high to the short side. Eernisse and Dakoda Rhéaume-Mullen tallied the assists.
Freshman center Cole McKinney continued to frustrate the Buckeyes, drawing a slashing penalty at 15:14 to give the power play another chance.
McKinney made the most of it when Aidan Park hammered home a one-timer from beyond the left dot to make it 3-0 with exactly three minutes remaining in the first. Junior Jayden Perron orchestrated the play from the point, while McKinney added the secondary helper.
Michigan carried a 3-0 lead into intermission after winning the faceoff battle (12-5) and holding a slight 10-8 edge in shots.
Sophomore star Michael Hage made it 4-0 at 3:33 of the second period, finishing off a rebound created by linemates Nick Moldenhauer and Will Horcoff.
Horcoff extended the lead to 5-0 at 7:22, chasing the Ohio State goaltender after scoring on a breakaway following a brilliant no-look stretch pass from Moldenhauer. Barnett earned the secondary assist.
Ohio State had its first true scoring chance with the extra skater following a penalty on former Buckeye Tyler Duke, but the Wolverines killed it off to maintain the shutout.
Tempers escalated with 32 seconds left in the second period when Ivankovic's crease was crowded, resulting in a 5-on-3 advantage for OSU. Michigan killed the remaining time to take a 5-0 lead into the locker room. Despite OSU leading 24-19 in shots, Ivankovic and the defensive corps held firm.
Michigan completed both kills to start the third, aided by a right-post deflection that kept the clean sheet intact.
T.J. Hughes extended the lead to 6-0 at 4:20, finishing a play sparked by a neutral-zone takeaway from Moldenhauer. The assist marked Moldenhauer's third point of the night, a new career high.
Ohio State appeared to score with 10:36 left, but the goal was immediately waved off for goaltender interference. The call was upheld following review.
Hughes struck again at 9:43, tapping in a netfront feed from Adam Valentini to make it 7-0. Schifsky recorded the secondary assist.
Michigan converted one final power play at 2:23 when Valentini tucked in a pass at the right post following a cross-crease feed from Horcoff. Junior Ben Robertson added the second assist, continuing his national lead among defensemen in helpers.
Ohio State spoiled the shutout with a power-play marker in the final minute, making it 8-1.
The Wolverines closed out the seven-goal win to celebrate the program's 100th all-time victory over Ohio State. The rivalry dates back to a Feb. 8, 1964 meeting, when Michigan earned a 21-0 road victory in Columbus. Sixty years later, the Wolverines secured another milestone with an emphatic eight-goal performance.
Next week, Michigan concludes the non-conference slate with a two-game road series at Harvard on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 28-29) at the Bright-Landry Center in Cambridge, Mass. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. and will stream live on ESPN+.
