INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's cross country team has been selected to compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championships, it was announced Saturday evening (Nov. 15) during the NCAA selection show.
The Wolverines fought to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday (Nov. 14) and earned one of 14 at-large bids available to teams that did not finish in the top two of the nine regional races around the country.
The NCAA Championships are scheduled for next Saturday (Nov. 22) at 10:10 a.m. CT on the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, Mo. The race will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
This selection marks U-M's fifth appearance in six years after missing the meet last season.
The process for deciding at-large berths is based on the accumulation of head-to-head victories over teams that qualified for nationals, up to and including the regional meet.
Michigan has been strong in the postseason, finishing fourth at the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 31. A trio of Wolverines, Nathan Lopez, Trent McFarland and Luke Venhuizen, earned All-Big Ten second-team honors as well as All-Region honors for their performances at Big Tens and Regionals.
