ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's golf head coach Zach Barlow announced Thursday (Nov. 13) the signing of two accomplished junior golfers -- Spencer Shropshire (Orillia, Ontario) and Mackey Beckett (Austin, Texas) -- to Big Ten scholarship agreements. Both will join the Wolverines for the 2026-27 season.
The two-member class brings national and international success to Ann Arbor, combining proven winners from two of North America's strongest junior golf regions. Shropshire and Beckett have each captured multiple titles at the provincial, state and national levels, showcasing consistency and scoring ability in elite competition.
"This class adds two players who have shown they can win and compete at the highest levels of junior golf," said Barlow. "Both Spencer and Mackey have had great success in strong fields, and they bring a maturity and work ethic that align perfectly with our program's culture. We're looking forward to helping them continue their development at Michigan."
Shropshire has developed into one of Canada's premier junior golfers with multiple titles at the provincial, national, and international levels. In 2025, he swept two of Ontario's top events -- winning both the Ontario Junior Boys Championship and the Ontario Tour Championship. His performance at the Ontario Junior included multiple sub-par rounds and a decisive final-round finish to claim the title.
He built on a strong 2024 season that featured a victory at the Canadian Juvenile Championship, where he led wire-to-wire to capture the national crown, and an international win at the AJGA Coca-Cola Championship, his first title on the American junior circuit. Across both Canadian and AJGA events, he has recorded several top-10 finishes and consistently ranked among the scoring leaders.
"Spencer has had tremendous success at every level of junior golf in Canada," said Barlow. "He's proven he can win in multiple formats and handle championship pressure. His ability to go low and stay consistent throughout multi-round events will translate well to the college game. We're excited to welcome him to Michigan and continue developing his talent."
Beckett has established himself among the top junior golfers in Texas. A standout performer in 2024, he captured the Class 6A Texas State Championship and set a tournament scoring record at the Bart Granger Memorial with a 195 (-17) performance. Earlier in the year, he added a win at the Legends Golf Alliance Invitational and qualified for match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.
He also posted a top-three finish at the George Hannon Invitational, continuing his streak of strong results against elite competition. His consistent play and ability to score in big events have made him one of the most accomplished players in his class and a key addition to the Wolverines' 2026-27 roster.
"Mackey has shown an impressive level of consistency and composure in big events across Texas, one of the strongest junior golf regions in the country," said Barlow. "Setting a scoring record and winning a state title shows his ability to perform under pressure. He's a great fit for our program with his competitive drive and strong foundation in all areas of the game."
Barlow's Wolverines enter the 2025-26 season with one of the youngest rosters in collegiate golf. With no upperclassmen on the current roster, Michigan continues to build experience and depth through a talented group of developing players. The addition of Shropshire and Beckett adds to that foundation for the seasons ahead.
