ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team earned a score of 310.900 in its season opener to sweep No. 14 Greenville (299.450) and No. 15 Simpson (287.400) on Saturday (Jan. 11) at Cliff Keen Arena.
U-M claimed five event titles, sweeping the podium on the high bar and still rings while putting two Wolverines on the podium in three other events. The Wolverines led after every rotation, seeing the widest lead after the fourth rotation.
Freshman Carson Eshleman had a breakout debut for the Maize and Blue, winning the still rings (13.400) and the high bar (13.500) titles. Syam Buradagunta and Solen Chiodi also made their Wolverine debuts.
How it Happened
Floor Exercise
Sophomore Jake Islam led off Michigan and collected a score of 12.400, tying for sixth, while Chiodi and David Wolma tied for second with scores of 12.700. Michigan ended the first rotation with a score of 49.90 and held a .250-point lead heading into the pommel horse.
Pommel Horse
Kyle Walchuk dominated with a score of 13.700 to win the event title, while senior Logan McKeown took third with a 13.000 for a team score of 51.850 and increased its lead over Greenville to 4.450 points.
Still Rings
The Maize and Blue earned its first podium sweep of the day, and a team score of 52.800, with senior Robert Noll kicking off the rotation with a score of 13.150. Eshleman made his Wolverine debut on the still rings (13.400), taking his first event title of the day. Rithik Puri closed the rotation with a second-place finish (13.350) to round out the podium finishers. At the halfway point, Michigan held a team score of 154.550 and led second-place Greenville (145.700) by 8.850 points.
Vault
Michigan posted its best score of the day (55.500) on vault, taking the top two spots. Senior Wolma's best performance of the day came courtesy of a 14.350 to win the event title. Landen Blixt was just behind Wolma, finishing in second with a 14.250.
Parallel Bars
Michigan stumbled on parallel bars, posting its lowest score (48.300) of the day to allow the Panthers and the Storm to regain some ground. McKeown's 13.750 earned him the event title, the only podium finish for the Wolverines on the event.
High Bar
U-M closed out the day with a podium sweep, posting an event score of 52.550 to secure the team sweep of the meet. Eshleman earned his second event title of the day with a score of 13.500, while Noll was just behind with a 13.400. Pierce Wolfgang saw his best score of the day with a 13.250, finishing third and earning a stick bonus.
