ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's tennis head coach Ronni Bernstein announced Wednesday (July 24) the addition of Ty Schaub and Jaan Kononov as assistant coaches for the 2024-25 season. In addition, former Wolverine Jaedan Brown will serve as a student assistant coach for the upcoming season.
"I am excited about the addition of Ty, Jaan and Jaedan to our coaching staff," Bernstein said. "I was fortunate to have Teryn (Ashley-Fitch) on staff for 17 years and will miss her but feel very lucky to have this trio in Ann Arbor to work with our team. I can't wait to get started in the fall!"
Ty Schaub, assistant coach
Schaub has spent time at South Carolina, Tennessee, San Diego, Iowa, Penn and Cornell throughout his career.
In his most recent stint as the associate head coach for South Carolina women's tennis (2019-22), he recruited and coached the No. 1-ranked college tennis player in the country. He coached a pair of Gamecocks to All-America honors, while helping South Carolina to a top-20 ranking. With the 2020 NCAA Tournament canceled due to the pandemic, Schaub helped South Carolina to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances in his final two seasons.
Schaub spent a pair of seasons in Knoxville (2017-19), serving as an assistant coach for the Tennessee women's team. He helped take Tennessee from a team ranked outside the top 75 into a team ranked inside the top 20 during his tenure. The Lady Vols made three straight NCAA Tournament appearances and peaked at No. 12 in the ITA team rankings. While being named the 2018 and 2019 ITA Regional Coach of the Year, he coached two players who earned All-America honors.
Following his stint in the Ivy League, he was an assistant on the men's side at Iowa (2014-15) and at San Diego (2015-16). At Iowa, he helped the Hawkeyes to their highest team ranking in program history to that point. With San Diego, he was part of a Toreros program that made its first-ever ITA National Team Indoor Championship appearance and won the 2015 West Coast Conference championship.
He began his coaching career in the Ivy League, starting at Cornell as an assistant for both the men's and women's programs in 2012. He moved to Penn as an assistant for the men's team from 2012-14.
As a student-athlete at Ohio State, Schaub's teams finished with a 129-8 record and claimed four Big Ten championships. He served as the team captain in 2009 when the Buckeyes were No. 1 in the country and reached the NCAA Tournament title match. He graduated with a degree in communications with a focus in analysis and practices. During the 2006-07 season, he was named a Big Ten Conference Men's Tennis Sportsmanship Award Winner.
Jaan Kononov, assistant coach
Kononov comes to Ann Arbor after spending last season as an assistant coach at Pepperdine, helping the Waves to a semifinal appearance in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
The Waves went 21-7 in 2024, finishing the season ranked No. 6 with five ranked singles players and a trio earning All-America honors. Pepperdine swept the West Coast Conference regular-season and tournament titles, the latter marking its 10th straight tournament crown.
He returned to Malibu after a season as an assistant coach at Minnesota (2022-23). He was a volunteer coach at Pepperdine from 2019-22.
In his first stint at Pepperdine, Kononov helped the Waves win three West Coast Conference championship titles and was instrumental in helping Janice Tjen, Savannah Broadus and Lisa Zaar make deep runs in the 2022 NCAA singles and doubles championships.
Before joining the Waves, Kononov was a graduate assistant at Grand Canyon for two seasons (2017-18, 2018-19), where the Antelopes won the Western Athletic Conference championship and tournament with a 19-7 record. At GCU, Kononov coached a top 60-ranked doubles team.
In his own professional tennis career, Kononov participated on the Estonian Davis Cup team and was an Estonian National Championship Finalist in doubles and singles.
He graduated from San Diego in 2016, where he helped the men's tennis team reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament and win a WCC title. He also played collegiately at Armstrong State (2012-14) and UMBC (2014-15) during his college tennis career.
Jaedan Brown, student assistant
Brown just completed her illustrious career this past season, helping Michigan to three Big Ten championships and three Big Ten Tournament titles throughout her four years. Brown earned All-America honors in doubles twice (2023, 2024) to become the seventh Wolverine in program history with multiple citations in a career.
Brown was named the MVP of the Big Ten Tournament twice (2022, 2023), while also earning All-Big Ten honors during those seasons. She won 88 singles matches during her career, highlighted by a 59-20 dual-match record and 30-4 Big Ten record.
