
Trio of Wolverines Named WGCA All-American Scholars

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- University of Michigan women's golfers Mara Janess, Sydney Sung and Sidney Yermish were recognized Monday (July 1) as All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association.
Janess made it a clean sweep with four academic honors during the 2023-24 season. In addition to her WGCA accolade, she was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, Academic All-Big Ten and a recipient of U-M's Athletic Academic Achievement honor. Enrolled in U-M's School of Kinesiology, she is beginning work towards a bachelor's in sport management.
After redshirting her freshman season, Janess started five of her seven events this season averaging 76.26 per round including a career-low 71 (-1) in the first round of the Big Ten Championships (April 19-21). During Big Tens, she hit a hole-in-one on Bulle Rock's par-3 seventh hole. With that tally, she carded her career-low 54-hole total of 225 at the conference tournament.
With three academic honors, Sung continues her work at U-M's prestigious Stephen M. Ross School of Business. After closing her freshman year by starting its final four events, she started seven of nine last season with a 76.00 scoring average. She highlighted the season using eight birdies to card a career-low 66 (-5) in the second round of the Chattanooga Classic (April 7-9), which helped U-M win the team title. Additionally, with three straight rounds of 73 at the Augusta Invitational (March 8-10), she posted her career-low 54-hole total of 219 (+3).
The only Wolverine to start all 11 events, newcomer Yermish closed third on the Wolverines with a 74.82 scoring average. He posted four sub-par rounds, including a career-low 68 (-4), twice. With a 214 (-2) total at the Augusta Invitational, he led U-M tying for eighth and helping the Wolverines to a runner-up team finish.
With the addition of the trio, Michigan women's golf has had 19 Wolverines honored by the WGCA with its highest honor. The U-M listing of WGCA All-American Scholars includes Tegan McCorkel (1994), Tiffany McCorkel (1994), Trish Watkins (1999), Amy Talbot (2000), Bess Bowers (2000), Sarah Kruer (2003), Lindsay Davis (2005), Caramia Sitompul (2011), Grace Choi (2015, '16, '17), Anika Dy (2020, '22, '23), Hannah Ghelfi (2020), and Monet Chun (2021). Megan Kim (2015, '16, '17, '18) and Mikaela Schulz (2020, '21, '22, '23) are the only Wolverines to be honored four times.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar team are some of the most stringent in of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative grade-point average is 3.50, and student-athletes must have competed in at least 66 percent of the school's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the season.
