ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan field hockey senior Serena Brimacombe and ice hockey senior Jacob Truscott were named U-M's Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2023-24 academic year by the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday (June 25).
Brimacombe became a consistent starter in the backfield for the first time in her career this season, appearing in all 17 games with 10 starts, and contributed to a defensive unit that allowed just 1.13 goals and 8.9 shots per game. After the season, she was honored with the team's Player's Player Award, voted by her teammates for exemplifying the traits that best represent what it means to be a Michigan field hockey player. She has spent time volunteering with the Ann Arbor VA hospital, volunteered in a research lab last summer to find a cure for Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) and Dravet Syndrome and is currently spending this summer in Utah with the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Brimacombe graduated with a bachelor's degree in molecular, cellular and developmental biology in April.
Brimacombe becomes the first representative from the field hockey program to garner the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award since the honor was first introduced in 2002-03.
Truscott captained the Michigan ice hockey team to its third consecutive Frozen Four this season. He played in all 41 games on defense and finished with 15 points and a team-best 51 blocked shots.
An Academic All-Big Ten selection, Truscott earned the Rachael Townsend Leadership Award, given by the University of Michigan Athletics Department in May. In giving back to the community, Truscott partnered with Michigan alum Zach Werenski to provide a hockey gameday experience to members of local nonprofits. After every single home game, he and a few of his teammates visit with those selected to attend the game, just outside the locker room. They gave parents of children who were fighting for their lives a brief escape from the hospital, show gratitude to veterans and volunteers, give patients joy and a reason to cheer, and create an amazing experience for those who would not have the means on their own. Additionally, Truscott has frequented Mott Children's Hospital for visits on many occasions, volunteer with Ele's Place 5K Run and organizes a weekly team bible study. A draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks, Truscott earned a degree in Applied Exercise Science this spring.
