STILLWATER, Okla. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team saw its 2023-24 season come to an end on Tuesday (May 21) in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
In singles action, Gala Mesochoritou fell in the second round to No. 13-ranked Celia-Belle Mohr of Vanderbilt, 6-0, 6-2. Mesochoritou tried to climb back in the second set after dropping the first four games, winning two straight to halve the deficit to 4-2. She was broken in her next service game as Mohr won the final two games to get the straight-set victory. Mesochoritou went 27-7 in singles action during her final season at Michigan, highlighted by an 18-5 record in dual matches. She holds the program's single-season record for winning percentage at 1.000 after going 17-0 as a freshman in 2021.
On the doubles court, Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller dropped a three-set heartbreaker to No. 10-ranked Connie Ma and Alexandra Yepifinova of Stanford. After dropping the first set, Michigan was broken at 3-2 and faced a 4-2 deficit after a Stanford hold. Michigan won two straight games but was broken again in the ninth game, giving the Cardinal an opportunity to serve out the match. U-M broke back immediately, sealing the game on a Stanford double fault. Both teams held in their next service games to send the set to a tiebreaker.
Tied at 5-5 in the breaker, U-M won the final two points to force a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a full third set. It was all Maize and Blue early as U-M jumped out to a 3-1 lead. The Cardinal responded by winning the next four points, taking the lead for good and never giving it back in the 10-5 win.
Mesochoritou, Brown and Miller have concluded their Michigan careers, winning three Big Ten championships, three Big Ten Tournament titles and making back-to-back appearances in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
