ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's golf coach Jan Dowling announced today (Friday, May 17), the additions of Frankfort, Ill., native, Jenna Shilts and Stockholm, Sweden, native, Thomasine Bartholdson to the incoming Class of 2024.
A 2023 AJGA Scholastic Honor Roll member, over the last two summers, she made back-to-back appearances at the Girl's Junior PGA Championships (2022, '23) earning medalist honors at her 2022 qualifier (69). Medalist at five Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) tournaments, she participated in the Junior Girls North and South Amateur (76-75-70/221), the Western Golf Association's Women's Western Junior Amateur (82-74/156), and tied for fourth at the AJGA Hilton Head Junior (73-71-71/215. She added two straight third-place finishes at the Medinah Shrine Junior Invitational.
"We are excited to have Jenna join our team," said Dowling. "She has great fundamentals and is a consistent player. Her athleticism, hard work, and development mindset will help her grow into a great collegiate player. She is driven to be a great student and athlete, which will bode well for her career in Ann Arbor."
A Frankfort, Ill., native, she was the No. 2 ranked golfer in Illinois, and 112th nationally. She heads to Ann Arbor after a standout prep career at Benet Academy. In 2023, she captured the East Suburban Catholic Conference (ESCC) title and Player of the Year honors while helping the Redwings capture the conference championship. She led Benet to the Class 2A State Finals in back-to-back seasons after winning two straight regional titles (2022, '23).
Heading to Ann Arbor from Stockholm, Bartholdson elected to have a gap year after finishing prep school at Wellington College. Over the last two years, she has recorded 10 top 10 finishes while competing in the Chilean Golf Federation, including four in 2024 -- fourth at Abierto de Granadilla (Jan. 26-28), fifth at Abierto de Cachagua (Jan. 5-7), sixth at Abierto Las Brisas de Santo Domingo (Feb. 1-3) and ninth at Abierto Rocas De Santo Domingo (Jan. 21-24).
"Thomasine provides some depth for us, and gets us excited about the future of our team," said Dowling. "She brings a ton of potential and will thrive in a team environment surrounded by fellow high-level golfers. She brings a wealth of maturity -- not only taking a gap year to work on her game but also has lived and attended high school worldwide. We are excited to assist Thomasine in her development!"
Bartholdson recently played in the Helen Holm Scottish Women's Open Championship at Royal Troon advancing to the final round and jumping 13 spots to tie for 43rd. In 2023, she closed with eight top-10 finishes, including medalist honors at Golfaction Final (Dec. 18-20) and runner-up finishes at HMC Stroke Play (Feb. 26-27) and at Abierto de Cachagua (Jan. 6-8);
Adding Shilts and Bartholdson gives Dowling four newcomers for the 2024-25 season following the early signings of Suzie Tran and Consuela "Mimi" Guo in early November.
