
Chun's U-M Record 61 Vaults Wolverines to Lead at Chattanooga Classic

» Monet Chun carded a 61 (-10) while Sydney Sung fired a career-low 66 (-5), giving Michigan a program record 271 (-13) and vaulting the Wolverines into the 36-hole lead at the Chattanooga Classic.
» With 11 birdies, six pars and a bogey, Chun became the seventh women's collegiate golfer to record a round of 61 (-10) and the first since 2020. She also set the single-round record for U-M as well as the Chattanooga Classic.
» With eight birdies of her own, Sung crushed her prior best tally of 71 (-1) with her first sub-70 round of 66 (-5).
» U-M's 271 (-13) total set a new program record by four shots, topping the 275 (-13) tallied in the first round of the 2015 Las Vegas Showdown (Oct. 25-27).

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- University of Michigan women's golf senior Monet Chun carded a U-MÂ and tournament record round of 61 (-10), combined with sophomore Sydney Sung's career-low 66 (-5), as the Maize and Blue posted a program record 271 (-13) second round total today (Monday, April 8) and vaulted into the lead at the Chattanooga Classic being played at the Council Fire Golf Club.
With 11 birdies, six pars and a bogey, Chun's 61 (-10) jumped her 22 spots into the individual lead with a 135 (-7) 36-hole total. With eight birdies of her own, Sydney Sung lowered her career-best by five shots with her first career sub-70 tally of 66 (-5).
Adding 72s (+1) from twin sister Lauren Sung and freshman Sidney Yermish, U-M used a program record 271 (-13) to jump eight spots into the tournament lead. After an opening 299 first round tally, the Wolverines are tied with South Florida (294-276) with a tournament record pace of 570 (+2) 36-hole total.
Chun's 61 (-10) eclipsed the tournament's 18-hole record by three shots; topping the 64 (-8) carded by SMU's Michelle Zhang set in the 2023 event. It also set a new program record at U-M by four shots; topping the rounds of 65 carded by Ashley Bauer in the second round at the 2010 Big Ten Championships (April 24) and Grace Choi in the second round at the 2015 Las Vegas Showdown (Oct. 26).
Most importantly, Chun became the seventh collegiate women's golfer to fire a round of 61 and first since 2022 when Illinois' Crystal Wang posted a 61 (-9) in the first round of the Schooner Fall Classic (Sept. 24).
Chun's 61 (-10) is tied for the second lowest in NCAA history. Earlier this fall, N.C. State's Lauren Olivares Leon carded a record 60 (-11) in the first round of the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club.
With 36-hole totals of 145, Sydney (79-66) and Lauren Sung (73-72) are tied for 15th, while Yermish is tied for 39th (150).
Chun and the rest of the Wolverines tee off in the final round on Tuesday (April 9) at 8:30 a.m. paired with South Florida (294-276/570) and Western Kentucky (291-282/573).
