ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won its 16th straight match, shutting out Purdue, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday (April 26) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan took the doubles point and matches at No. 6, No. 5 and No. 3 to complete the clean sweep.
U-M raced out to a fast start in doubles action, taking a pair of 4-0 leads at both No. 1 and No. 2. Michigan's top pair of Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller eventually went up 5-0 before Purdue answered with three straight games. Miller served out the match in the next game, giving U-M a 6-3 win.
The No. 3 pair of Julia Fliegner and Lily Jones won the final five games of their match at No. 3, grabbing a break at 3-1 and never giving it back in a 6-1 victory to clinch the doubles point.
U-M swept all six first sets in singles action.
Piper Charney ran her winning streak to 14, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 for Michigan's second point of the afternoon. She rattled off five straight games in the second set to record the win.
Jones quickly followed on the court next to Charney, delivering a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 5 for her 25th singles win of the season. Jones used a late break in the second set to get the win, going up 5-4 and serving it out in the ensuing game.
It was a race to finish from there as Gala Mesochoritou and Fliegner held concurrent match points on courts adjacent to each other. Fliegner delivered the fourth point for the Wolverines in a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3. She got the break she needed at 4-2 in the first set and did not look back to get the win. In the second set, it was much of the same as she went up 3-1 and kept the break throughout in her fourth straight win.
With the win, Michigan has advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament and will face Wisconsin tomorrow (Saturday, April 27) at 10 a.m. The Big Ten Tournament is being held at the Varsity Tennis Center.
