ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team collected multiple postseason Big Ten honors, with three players earning All-Big Ten mention, Kari Miller earning her second Big Ten Athlete of the Year honor and Ronni Bernstein being tabbed the Big Ten Coach of the Year for the third straight season, the conference announced Wednesday (April 24).
Joining Miller on the All-Big Ten team were Gala Mesochoritou and Julia Fliegner.
Miller, who also earned the conference's top honor in 2022, is the fourth Wolverine in school history to earn two Athlete of the Year honors -- joining Kate Fahey (2018, '19), Emina Bektas (2014, '15) and Denise Muresan (2010, '11). Miller is ranked No. 3 nationally in singles, holding a 28-7 overall record and a 13-4 record at the top of the lineup. She swept the singles and doubles titles at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. She picked up her fourth All-Big Ten honor as well, becoming the first Wolverine with four citations since Fahey and Brienne Minor each grabbed four straight from 2016-19.
Fliegner grabbed her second straight All-Big Ten honor after completing the regular season with a 20-11 overall singles record and an 8-5 record in dual matches. She is the third-highest ranked singles player in the Big Ten, coming in at No. 27 in this week's rankings. Fliegner has 10 wins over currently ranked singles players, including three over players ranked in the top 15. She was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week twice this season.
Mesochoritou was honored by the conference for the first time in her career as she has vaulted up the lineup in her final season in the maize and blue. Coming in at No. 58 in this week's singles rankings, Mesochoritou holds a 24-3 overall singles record and a 16-2 mark in dual matches. She went 7-0 in Big Ten play and enters the postseason on a seven-match winning streak. She was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week once this season.
Bernstein earned her Big Ten-record ninth Coach of the Year honor after leading Michigan to its 11th Big Ten championship since 2010. The Big Ten recipient for the last three seasons, Bernstein helped Michigan to a runner-up finish at this year's ITA National Team Indoor Championship and a program-best ranking of No. 2.
For the second straight season, Lily Jones was Michigan's Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree.
Michigan is the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament at the Varsity Tennis Center. The tournament begins today (April 24) and runs through Sunday (April 28). Michigan will begin play on Friday (April 26) against either Purdue or Minnesota. Admission to the event is free.
