
Richard Named Big Ten Gymnast of the Year

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore Fred Richard of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team has been named Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday (April 2).
Richard currently owns the No. 1 all-around score in the NCAA with a score of 86.950 and is No. 1 on high bar (14.517) as well as No. 2 on pommel horse (14.267). Overall, he has captured nine event titles on the season with five on high bar -- and one each on pommel horse, parallel bars, vault and in the all-around.
Richard, a winner of the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week on March 18, also took home Big Ten Specialist of the Week honors twice on the season (Jan. 22, Feb. 5).
The Big Ten Gymnast of the Year honor is the tenth in school history, with teammate Paul Juda winning the accolade in 2021 and 2022. It is the second major Big Ten award of Richard's U-M tenure, as he was the unanimous selection for Big Ten Freshman of the Year last season.
Additionally, teammate junior Lais Najjar was honored as the team's Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree.
A member of the U.S. Senior National Team, Richard will help lead the No. 3-ranked Wolverines into the the Big Ten Championships, April 5-6, in Champaign, Ill.
