MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team kept it rolling, winning its 13th straight match in a 6-1 win over Minnesota on Sunday afternoon (April 14) at the Baseline Tennis Center. With the win, Michigan remains atop the Big Ten standings at 9-0 in conference play.
The Wolverines grabbed the early lead, winning both doubles matches to finish, putting the first point on the board. Michigan grabbed early breaks at both No. 1 and No. 2, going up 2-0 on both courts before getting a 3-1 break at No. 3.
The freshman duo of Piper Charney and Reese Miller finished first, getting a 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot. After getting the early break, Michigan kept it throughout and only dropped just one game in recording the win.
It was a race to finish from there as both Michigan teams were closing in on a win. The No. 1 team of Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller did the honors, winning a 6-2 match at the top spot. Much like U-M's No. 2 team, Brown and Kari Miller took control early and never gave the break back in putting the first point on the board for the Maize and Blue. U-M's No. 3 pair of Lily Jones and Julia Fliegner held a match point before their match was abandoned.
Michigan took five first sets in singles action, with Minnesota pulling even at 1-1 in the team match after a Michigan retirement at No. 2.
Minnesota's lead was short-lived as Michigan answered with three singles wins in short order to clinch the match. Jones dropped just three games in picking up her ninth straight singles win, getting a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 to erase the Minnesota lead.
Bayley Sheinin picked up her first dual-match win of the season, winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6. She won the first three games and the final three games of the first set to take early control and dropped just one game in the second set, pushing Michigan's lead to 3-1.
Fliegner did the honors for the second straight match, clinching the Michigan win with a straight-set win at No. 3. She used a fast start in her first set, winning the first four games en route to a 6-1 win. In the second, Fliegner was in a 3-1 hole before winning five of the final six games for the straight-set win.
With the match in hand, Kari Miller closed out her 28th overall win of the season in a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1.
Charney put Michigan's sixth point on the scoreboard behind a 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (7) win at No. 4. After winning the first five games in the first set to get the 6-1 win, she fell behind early in the second and could not complete the comeback. In the 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a full third set, she led 8-4 at the second changeover and cashed in on her first match point to provide the 6-1 margin.
Michigan wraps up the regular season next weekend, hosting Iowa on Saturday (April 20) and Nebraska on Sunday (April 21) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Both matches are set for noon.
