GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- With a final-round career-low 67 (-3) from fifth-year senior Hailey Borja as well as a career weekend from freshman Sidney Yermish, the University of Michigan women's golf team rallied using a season-low closing 277 (-3) Saturday (March 2) to tie for sixth with a season-best 862 54-hole total at Florida's Gators Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
With expected severe weather throughout the weekend, the tournament was moved up a day to Friday (March 1). On that first day, senior Monet Chun paced the Wolverines with her 72 (+2), while Borja and Yermish added 73s to give U-M a 298 and positioned them in a tie for ninth. With the field heading back out for the second round, darkness suspended play as most of the 14-team field made it through nine holes.
Returning Saturday morning, Borja and Yermish fired tallies of even-par 70, while Chun etched a second straight 72 as U-M posted a 287 and kept it in the ninth spot. Heading straight into the final 18, the 78-golfer field fought its way through 14 holes before lightning and heavy rain warnings pulled the field from the course.
After an hour delay, play resumed and Borja used five birdies to fire a career-low 67 (-3), while Yermish's 69 (-1), Chun's even 70 and sophomore Sydney Sung's 71 (+1) helped the Maize and Blue to a season-low 277 (-3) and jump three spots to tie for sixth, along with North Carolina, with an 862 total. U-M's 277 (-3) marked the third-lowest team total in program history, while the season-best 862 total cracked into the all-time top 10 for 54-hole events.
After recording a career-low 68 five times in her prior four seasons, Borja finally snapped that with her 67 (-5) in the final round. After rounds of 73 and 70, her 210 total tied for eighth -- her 15th career top-10 finish. Yermish smashed his prior 54-hole career best by eight shots with a 212 (73-70-69) to tie for 13th -- a second top-20 of the season. Chun closed among the top 25 as she tied for 22nd after her 214 (72-72-70).
Playing as an individual, sophomore Lauren Sung just missed her career-low by a single shot as she tallied a season-low 214 (73-70-71) to tie for 14th and finish as the top non-starting competitor.
After returning to Ann Arbor for the week, the Wolverines will head back out for the weekend in Augusta, Ga., playing in the Valspar Augusta Invitational next Saturday and Sunday (March 9-10). The two-day, 54-hole event will feature a field of 17 teams playing at the Forest Hills Golf Course.
