
Michigan to Host No. 6 Penn State on Senior Day

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team (11-2, 1-2 Big Ten) closes out the 2024 regular season with a matchup against No. 6 Penn State (3-1, 1-1 Big Ten) on Sunday (March 17) at 4 p.m. The meet will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
Notes
• The Wolverines will honor graduating seniors Evgeny Siminiuc, Chris Read, Javier Alfonso, and Steven Lukasik following the meet. Graduate student Paul Juda will return to Ann Arbor next season for a sixth season with the program.
• Michigan is ranked No. 5 in the latest Road to Nationals rankings (410.083). In individual events, U-M ranks No. 2 on parallel bars (68.700) and still rings (68.650), and is No. 4 on high bar (67.483).
• Sophomore Fred Richard was recently named a finalist for the 94th AAU James Sullivan Award, given to the nation's top collegiate, Olympic or other similar elite level athlete in the United States. In addition to athletic excellence, the award recognizes the qualities of leadership, citizenship, character, and sportsmanship on and off the playing surface. He was named a finalist along with several others, highlighted by fellow Big Ten student-athlete Caitlin Clark (women's basketball).
• Senior Javier Alfonso continues to lead the NCAA on still rings with a 14.767 three-score average, and Richard is No. 1 on high bar (14.367). Other Wolverines in the top three on their events are junior David Wolma on vault (No. 2, 14.767), sophomore Landen Blixt on floor exercise (No. 3, 14.317) and graduate Crew Bold on parallel bars (No. 3, 14.567) round out the individual ranks.
• Richard owns the fourth-highest score in the NCAA on pommel horse (15.00), while Alfonso boasts the second-highest mark on still rings (15.10). Juda's 15.10 on vault is tied for tops in the country, while Richard leads the country on high bar by .200 points with a score of 14.90. Juda's all-around high of 86.200 tops the country in the discipline as well.
• Penn State ranks No. 6 in the country (402.533) and also holds the No. 6 spot on floor exercise (67.033), parallel bars (67.250) and high bar (65.867). Their top gymnast is Josh Karnes, who leads the NCAA on parallel bars with a score of 14.567.
• With the regular season concluding following Sunday's competition, U-M sets its sights on another Big Ten Championship on Friday and Saturday, April 5-6 in Champaign, Ill.
