
Michigan Blanks Columbia for Second Straight Home Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team took the doubles point and claimed five first sets in singles en route to a 4-0 shutout win over Columbia on Friday evening (Feb. 23) at the Varsity Tennis Center. It was the Wolverines' second home win in as many days and third shutout win of the season.
Michigan grabbed the early advantage, jumping out to big leads to take the doubles point behind decisive wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
It was all Michigan at the No. 3 spot as Reese Miller and Piper Charney dropped just one game in a 6-1 win to take the early advantage. The No. 2 duo of Julia Fliegner and Lily Jones quickly followed with a 6-3 win, earning breaks 1-1 and 3-1 to give Michigan an early 1-0 team lead.
U-M won five first sets in singles action and worked quickly to clinch three second sets and wrap up the team win.
Charney was first off the court, rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sophia Wang at No. 6. She improved to 8-3 in duals in her rookie campaign and owns a perfect 4-0 record at the No. 6 spot. Over the last two matches, Charney dropped just two total games in back-to-back straight-set wins. Â
Gala Mesochoritou and Jones finished within just a few minutes of each other at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. Mesochoritou defeated Krishnan, 6-0, 6-2, claiming the final three games in the second. She ran her singles winning streak to six, improving her singles record to 9-1 in dual matches.
Jones defeated Natacha Schou, 6-0, 6-1, giving up just one game early in the second set to put the final point on the board for the Wolverines.
Of the Wolverines' three abandoned singles matches, two claimed the first set, while Fliegner also led 2-1 in the second. In all, Michigan sacrificed just 15 total games across its six singles matches.
Michigan heads west for a spring break training trip, traveling to Hawaii for a week of training before facing Hawai'i on March 1 at 3:30 p.m. HST.
