WACO, Texas -- Julia Fliegner of the University of Michigan women's tennis team became the second player in program history to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship, knocking off Luciana Perry from Ohio State on Friday (Nov. 22) at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Fliegner avenged an earlier loss this season to Perry in the ITA Midwest Regional Championship, defeating Perry in the quarterfinals, 7-6 (4), 6-3. With the win, she joins Brienne Minor as Wolverines to advance to the semifinals.
In the first set, Fliegner fell behind 2-0 in the early going. She won two straight games to get back on serve, where the set remained over the ensuing games. Fliegner broke Perry in the ninth game for a 5-4 lead, but Perry immediately returned the favor to tie the set at 5-5. Both players held their following service games, sending the set to a tiebreaker.
Fliegner took control early, winning the first four points and six of the first seven. Perry staved off three set points, but Fliegner converted on the fourth to get the 7-4 win.
In the second set, Fliegner won the first two games but could not consolidate the break in the next game as Perry got back on serve at 2-1. The two kept trading breaks in the middle stages of the set before Fliegner finally held at love for a 5-2 lead. Perry won her next service game to get within 5-3, but Fliegner closed out the match in the next game on her serve to record the win.
Fliegner will face No. 2 Dasha Vidmanova in Saturday's (Nov. 23) semifinals.
