WACO, Texas -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team went 3-for-3 in its first-round singles matches as Julia Fliegner, Lily Jones and Piper Charney each won in straight sets on the first day of action at the NCAA Championships on Tuesday (Nov. 19) at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Charney was first up for the Wolverines, picking up a 6-3, 6-1 over Tatum Evans of North Carolina. Charney fell behind 3-1 in the early going before ripping off five straight games to record the first-set win. Evans held serve to start the second half, but similar to the first set, Charney went on a tear by winning six straight games to record the victory.
Jones moved to 2-0 in her career against Viriginia's Sara Ziodato, grabbing a 6-4, 6-4 win. Jones fell in a 4-2 hole in the first set, but answered with four straight games to take the first set. The two went back-and-forth in the second set, with Jones grabbing a break at 5-4. She was able to consolidate the break and serve out the match in the ensuing game to advance to the round of 32.
Fliegner closed the day for Michigan with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Miami's Raquel Gonzales. In the first set, Fliegner won the first two games and kept the break the rest of the way to pick up the win. She was equally as dominant in the second set, winning the final five games to record the win.
Singles action will continue Wednesday (Nov. 20), with Jones teaming up with freshman Jessica Bernales in the doubles tournament beginning as well.
