STILLWATER, Okla. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team pushed the last two matches on court to three sets but could not convert, dropping a 4-2 match to No. 5-ranked Oklahoma State on Friday evening (Jan. 19) at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
Oklahoma State took the doubles point, sandwiching wins at No. 2 and No. 3 around U-M's win at No. 1. Michigan's top pair of Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller, ranked No. 8, knocked off the No. 6-ranked duo of Anastasiya Komar and Ange Oby Kajurua, 6-3, for Michigan's lone doubles win.
The Wolverines started to turn the tide in singles action, winning four first sets from Piper Charney, Gala Mesochoritou, Lily Jones and Julia Fliegner.
Making her dual-match debut, Charney pulled the Maize and Blue even with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6. Charney used a fast start in the first set, winning four of the first five games, to take the 6-2 win. In the second, she recovered from an early break at 2-1 by winning five of the next six games to put Michigan's first point on the board.
Oklahoma State countered by winning the next two matches off court in straight sets for a 3-1 lead.
Fliegner pulled Michigan within a point, 3-2, behind a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 over No. 2-ranked Ange Oby Kajuru. It was all Fliegner in the first set as she won the first three games and never looked back in the set. In the second, Fliegner again relied on a fast start by taking a 4-1 lead en route to the win.
With Oklahoma State's lead down to 3-2, Michigan needed both matches left on court.
Jones and Mesochoritou each went up a break early in their respective third sets but neither could consolidate the break to keep the advantage. Mesochoritou fought off a match point at No. 4 to stay on court and tie her set at 5-5 to keep Michigan's hopes alive.
Jones jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third but could not keep the momentum, as OSU wrapped up a three-set win at No. 5 to clinch the 4-2 victory.
U-M will wrap up a two-game road swing to start dual-match action with a Sunday (Jan. 21) match at Oklahoma at noon CST.
