ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Savannah Sutherland of the University of Michigan track and field team was named the Women's Big Ten Track Athlete of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday (June 20). The award was determined by a poll of Big Ten head coaches.
Sutherland is the NCAA champion in the 400-meter hurdles after finishing first in the event in 54.45 seconds on June 10. The time was a program record, a Canadian U23 record, a lifetime best, and a world standard mark. She is currently ranked 10th in the world in the event.
The sophomore's outdoor season was marked by continued success, having won the 400-meter hurdles at the Big Ten Championships and topping the event at the NCAA East Preliminaries. Sutherland also was a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 school-record setting relay teams.
