COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With junior Monet Chun rallying to earn a share of medalist honors, the University of Michigan women's golf team closed Lady Buckeye Invitational with a 295 third-round tally to finish sixth today (Sunday, April 16) with an 872 54-hole total at OSU's Scarlet Course.
Posting three straight sub-par tallies, Chun led the Wolverines from start to finish. After an opening 71 (-1), she posted a clean sheet 67 (-5) in the second round to put her fourth after 36 holes. In the second round, she carded 13 parts and five birdies, including four on the back-nine, to record her season-low and second-lowest of her career.
Returning for the final round, Chun would go 28 straight holes without a blemish on the scorecard. A bogey on No. 13 snapped her run; however, she would bounce back with two more back-nine birdies to make the turn to the front. Closing with a 70 (-2), she found herself up two spots in the runner-up position. As Maryland's Patricie Mackova reached her final three holes with a two-shot lead, she bogeyed her final two holes giving Chun a share of the second tournament win of her career.
After a second-place finish in the 2021 NCAA Columbus Regional, where the Wolverines advanced to the NCAA Finals, Chun has recorded five of her last six rounds at the Scarlet Course under par.
Playing in the rare 6-count-4 format, U-M opened with a 291 team total, led by Chun's 71, an even-par 72 from senior Anika Dy and a 73 (+1) by freshman Sydney Sung. With an even-par 72 from freshman Lauren Sung along with senior Hailey Borja's 73 (+1) and Chun's 67, the Wolverines followed with a 286 (-2) second-round score to finish the day tied for fifth at one-under 577. The second 18 total marked the sixth sub-par team total of the season.
With Chun's 70 added to a 74 from Dy and a 75 from senior Mikaela Schulz, the Maize and Blue closed at 295 to finish sixth with an 872 total.
Behind Chun's medalist honor, Dy tied for 27th at 221 (72-75-74), while Borja tied for 37th at 224 (75-73-76). Returning to the starting lineup, Schulz tied for 48th at 227 (78-74-75) to give U-M four among the top 50 in the 87-player field.
With the regular season completed, the Wolverines begin the postseason defending their 2022 Big Ten title, as they will head to Pittsburgh, Pa., and the Fox Chapel Golf Club for the 2023 conference championships, Friday through Sunday, April 21-23. After Chun captured U-M's second individual title, she guided U-M to the program's first-ever title with an 857 total to win by four shots over Michigan State.
