Wolverines Rally for B1G Win at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team rallied after dropping the doubles point, winning the first four singles matches off court in straight sets for a 4-1 win over Nebraska on Friday (March 17) at the Dillon Tennis Center. The win was Michigan's first Big Ten road win of the season and moved the Wolverines to 3-0 in conference action.
Nebraska grabbed the early lead by winning the final two doubles matches to win the first point. Andrea Cerdan and Merri Kelly broke for a 4-2 lead, holding in the next game for the 5-2 advantage en route to the 6-2 win at No. 3 as the first match was done.
Michigan fought off a pair of match points at No. 2 to send it to a breaker, but Nebraska prevailed to even the doubles ledger at one match each. Nebraska took the doubles point with another tiebreak win at No. 1 for the 1-0 lead.
Michigan got off to a slow start in singles, falling behind on several courts before turning the tide. The Wolverines eventually won five first sets, the only one they failed to win was a tiebreak set at No. 1.
Gala Mesochoritou wasted little time pulling Michigan even, dropping just three games in a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6.
Jaedan Brown pushed the Maize and Blue ahead for the first time in the match, winning 12 of the final 14 games after falling in a 2-0 hole for a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2.
It was a race to finish from there as both Lily Jones and Cerdan had big leads in their respective second sets after rallying for 7-5 wins in the first sets.
Jones was first to finish, grabbing a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 4. Jones took advantage of a late break in the first set and rode the momentum in the second, not dropping a game for Michigan's third point.
Cerdan followed moments later with a 7-5, 6-2 win over her own at No. 5 to wrap up the win for U-M.
The Wolverines conclude their non-conference schedule on Wednesday (March 22), heading to Florida for a 3 p.m. match.
