MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Senior Hailey Borja posted a top-10 individual finish for the second-straight event and fourth time this season, helping to lead the 33rd-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team to an 855 (-9) team total and tie for seventh place at the 2023 Moon Golf Invitational played at the Suntree Country Club's Classic Course.
"Overall, this event at Suntree was a great experience for our team," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "The wind changed direction every day, so making adjustments was super important. Our second round was very special, and our lowest of the season. We've been preaching patience and for us to go seven-under on the last hole was a testament to that patience and belief. That round shows evidence of what we are capable of. Today in the final round, we had plenty of positives, and will continue to learn and improve as our season progresses."
In yet another loaded field featuring 13 of the GolfStat top 50 teams, the Wolverines opened Sunday's (Feb. 19) play with a 286 (-2) team total as junior Monet Chun paced the round with her 70 (-2), while Borja and fellow-senior Anika Dy each carded 71s (-1).
With U-M positioning itself tied for 11th after the first 18, freshman Lauren Sung stole the show for the Maize and Blue in the second round as she fired a career and team season-low 67 (-5). With four birdies and a closing eagle on the 18th hole, she guided the Wolverines to a 278 (-10) tally for the day, vaulting U-M six spots into a tie for fifth. Helping produce U-M's third-lowest team total all-time, Borja and Chun each carded sub-par 69s (-3).
With a closing 70 (-2) from Borja and an even 72 from Dy, U-M closed at 291 in the final round to produce a nine-under 855 total -- the third lowest 54-hole team total in program history. The Wolverines finished tied for seventh along with No. 19 Vanderbilt, No. 21 UCF and No. 25 Arkansas.
Individually, Borja made it two-straight top-10 finishes as her 210 (-6) tally put her in a three-way tie for tenth. Overall, it was her fourth top-10 finish of the season and second sub-par 54-hole total. Chun's season-low 212 (-4) helped put two Wolverines among the top 20 as she tied for 17th. For Chun, it marked the first sub-par total of the season and the sixth of her career.
"This weekend was a very loaded field on an open course," said Borja, "so staying patient and focused is what helped us get through the week. We discussed this as a team: focus only on what we can control. For me, I really focused on controlling how I reacted to outcomes. This helped me stay consistent and take one shot at a time. I couldn't be prouder of my team for hanging in there in a competitive field and trusting their game. This tournament was a good sneak peek to what we will do in the next upcoming tournaments."
Dy rounded out the top three for Michigan as she tied for 37th with an even par and season-low-tying 216 (71-73-72). Firing a career-low 67 (-5) in the second round, Sung posted a new career-best 219 (+3) and tied for 57th.
The Maize and Blue return to action in early March as the Wolverines look to defend their title at Florida's VyStar Gators Invitational, which is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday (March 4-5) in Gainsville, Florida. Last year at the Mark Bostick Golf Course, U-M shared the team title with host Florida after both posted 851 totals -- the second lowest 54-hole team total in U-M history. U-M doubled up as Ashley Kim's 203 (-7) tally claimed medalist honors.
