LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team posted five individual placewinners, including a runner-up finish from graduate student Lucas Davison, to claim eighth place (81.5 points) at the 41st annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 2) at the Westgate Paradise Event Center.
Davison, ranked third nationally at heavyweight, fell to Iowa State's seventh-ranked Yonger Bastida 5-3 in the championship match. After staving off a few ISU attacks in the first and scrambling out of a deep single-leg shot late in the second, Davison had an opportunity to clinch it late but could not finish on a single shot of his own on the edge of the mat. Bastida converted off the subsequent whistle, finishing on the go-ahead single-leg takedown with just nine seconds left.
Davison, who also finished as the CKLV runner-up last season, earned a 6-2 decision over Campbell's 15th-ranked Taye Ghadiali in the semifinals. After a scoreless first period, Davison went feet-to-back off an ankle pick for five points to break the bout open early in the second period. He is 6-1 on the season.
Fifth-year senior Cameron Amine, ranked third at 165 pounds, took fourth place after falling 3-1 to Iowa State's second-ranked David Carr in the third-place bout on a stall call and 1:30 in riding-time advantage. He finished with a 4-2 record to place at CKLV for the second time in his career. Amine split is morning-session matches, falling 6-4 to Oklahoma State's fourth-ranked and eventual champion Izzak Olejnik on a last-second takedown before bouncing back with a 4-1 decision against Ohio's 19th-ranked Garrett Thompson in the consolation semifinals.
Graduate students Michael DeAugustino and Will Lewan and senior/junior Jaden Bullock all placed sixth in the morning session. DeAugustino, ranked fifth at 125 pounds, withdrew to sixth after injury defaulting out of his semifinal bout at the 6:21 mark after appearing to tweak his leg in the third period.
Lewan, ranked sixth at 157 pounds, dropped three matches -- all to top-10 opponents -- on the day to take sixth place, including a 12-10 decision against Stanford's ninth-ranked Daniel Cardenas in the medal round after scoring the bout's first two takedowns. It was his second straight top-six CKLV finish.
Bullock, unranked at 184 pounds, posted a 5-3 record en route to sixth place in his CKLV debut. He opened the day with a big 9-6 comeback win over NC State's 20th-ranked Dylan Fishback in sudden victory. Bullock rallied with a third-period double-leg takedown, and after a Fishback, won it with another takedown out of an extended overtime scramble. He dropped his next two bouts by a takedown or less, including a 10-9 decision -- on riding time -- to Air Force's Sam Wolf in the fifth-place bout.
Michigan will next compete in the new year when they travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., for a non-conference matchup against South Dakota State on Thursday, Jan. 4. The dual is slated for a 7 p.m. CST start at the Sanford Pentagon.
