SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Gavin Young of the University of Michigan men's tennis team reached the second round of the ITA Fall Nationals, but fell on Thursday (Nov. 2) to end his run at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Thursday's second-round match pitted Young against No. 81 Jack Anthrop of Ohio State, with Anthrop ending Young's run with 6-3, 7-5 wins.
Young won his first-round match on Wednesday (Nov. 1) defeating No. 15 ranked Michael Zheng (Columbia) in two sets for his fifth victory over a ranked opponent. The foes traded breaks to open the first set before Zheng won four straight points to take a 4-1 advantage. Young battled back to take three straight to even the set at 4-4. Knotted at 5-5, Young won the final two games for the come-from-behind win.
Young used the momentum to open the second set on a 4-0 run, and finished with a 6-2 victory.
It was sweet revenge for the Wolverine, who lost to Zheng in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship last May in the second round.
Young reached the fall nationals for the first time in his career after reaching the semifinals of the ITA All-American Championships one month ago.
Michigan rounds out its fall competition schedule at the Big Ten Singles and Doubles Championships in Madison, Wis. Play begins today (Nov. 2) and runs through Sunday (Nov. 5).
