EAST LANSING, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior/junior Dylan Ragusin captured the 133-pound title to headline a contingent of 12 total Wolverine placewinners at the annual Michigan State Open on Saturday (Nov. 11) at Jension Field House.
Ragusin, who competed unattached while starting the season in redshirt, went 4-0 and rolled to three straight bonus wins -- outscoring his opposition 39-9 in those bouts -- before gritting out a 7-6 tiebreaker win over Ohio State's Andre Gonzalez in the championship match. Gonzalez scored off the opening whistle, but Ragusin escaped quickly and earned a takedown of his own in the final minute of the first period. After trading a reversal and two escapes in the second and third periods, Ragusin escaped halfway through the first :30 tiebreaker then rode out the second to seal the win.
Senior/junior Jaden Bullock went 3-1, also earning three straight bonus wins to start the tournament, but dropped his finals match to Princeton's Kole Mulhauser, 9-3, after sacrificing a takedown and near fall in the first period. It was Bullock's first competition in nearly a year after suffering a season-ending injury last year.
Four Wolverine freshmen placed in their collegiate debuts. Caden Horwath and Connor Owens placed fourth at 125 and 174 pounds, respectively, in the freshman/sophomore division, while Sergio Lemley took third at 141 and Beau Mantanona placed fifth at 165 pounds in the open division. Lemley posted a 3-1 record and used a pair of takedowns and riding time to beat Northern Illinois' Dylan Gvillo, 8-1, in the medal round. Mantanona went 4-2 -- with both losses coming against top-10 opponents -- and defeated Central Michigan's Tyler Swiderski, 15-6, behind eight back points in the second period.
Junior/sophomore Zack Mattin and senior/junior Joseph Walker also placed third at 157 and 174 pounds, respectively. Mattin went 4-1 and earned a ranked win over Oklahoma's No. 24 Jared Hill, 8-1, with two takedowns in the consolation semifinals. He also defeated Wisconsin's Cody Goebel, 9-3, in the medal round. Walker posted a 5-1 record with three bonus wins; he used a late third-period takedown to defeat Northern Illinois' Hayden Pummel, 4-1, in the third-place match.
Michigan will kick off its dual season with two meets on the road next weekend. U-M will face Columbia at 7 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 17) in New York, N.Y., before traveling south to wrestle Rider at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 19) in Lawrence Township, N.J. Both duals will be streamed live on ESPN+.
