
Wolverines Fall in Three Sets in Road Contest at No.19 Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell to Penn State in three sets (23-25, 22-25, 13-25) at Rec Hall on Friday night (Nov. 10).
Jacque Boney led the team in kills with eight and was errorless on 26 attacks. Hannah Grant tallied double-digit digs and added three service aces. Two other Wolverines reached double-digit digs with Maddi Cuchran and Kendall Murray both tallying 10. Morgan Burke led the team in assists with 22 and added an ace as well. Serena Nyambio led the team in blocks with three.
Michigan (6-18, 4-11 Big Ten) took an early lead in the match after two aces from Grant to open the scoring. The Wolverines took a 5-2 lead after a kill from Boney, but Penn State tied the match at eight for the first time. Murray gave Michigan the lead once again with a kill and Boney extended the U-M lead. PSU took its first lead of the match at 12-11 after an ace. Burke tallied a kill to tie the match at 12, but the Nittany Lions managed to take a 15-13 lead and then a 20-17 lead. Michigan then went on a 4-0 run to take the lead, a kill from Grant tied the match at 20 and a PSU attack error gave the Wolverines a 21-20 lead. The Wolverines could not hold off Penn State as the Nittany Lions took the first set 25-23.
Penn State (15-8, 10-5 Big Ten) controlled the second set early and took a 9-6 lead after four tied scores. Michigan brought the second set to within one after a block from Nyambio and McBurrows at 9-8. The Lions then went on an 8-1 run to take a 17-9 lead. Michigan ended the run with back-to-back kills from Amalia Simmons and Boney. PSU won the race to 20 and took a 21-14 lead. A kill from Boney and Nyabmio brought U-M to 16 in the set. PSU took the next two points to take a 23-16 lead. Michigan stayed in the set and went on a 6-0 run led by Burke from the service line, Burke tallied an ace and Nyambio tallied two blocks, one solo and one assisted. The run brought the Wolverines to within one, but they could not complete the comeback.
Michigan opened the third set with a block from Simmons and Boney but fell behind, 2-1. Penn State kept the lead for the remainder of the match. The Nittany Lions took the final set, 25-13, and the match, 3-0.
Michigan will continue its road trip further east when it takes on Rutgers on Sunday (Nov. 12) at 1 p.m., with the match streaming on B1G+.
