Wolverines Conclude Action at ITA Fall National Championships

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team sent two singles players and a doubles team to the round of 16 at the ITA Fall National Championships, held at the Barnes Tennis Center (Nov. 1-2).
Kari Miller and Julia Fliegner each picked up first-round singles victories in the main draw. Miller knocked off Neha Velaga of Princeton in straight sets, with the No. 41-ranked Fliegner getting past No. 26-ranked Connie Ma of Stanford. After Fliegner took a 6-2 first-set win, Ma countered with a break of serve to start the second set. Fliegner eventually got the set back on serve and wrapped up the straight-set win by winning six of the final eight games. Both saw their runs stopped in the next round by a pair of North Carolina Tar Heels.
On the doubles front, Miller and Jaedan Brown recorded a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (9) win over Vanderbilt's Celia-Belle Mohr and Anessa Lee in the first round. With a first set in hand, the Wolverines fell behind in the second and tried to mount a rally. Facing a 4-1 deficit, U-M won the next two games to get back on serve at 4-3. The teams exchanged breaks over the next there games as Vandy recorded the win.
It was much of the same in the 10-point breaker in lieu of a third set, with Vanderbilt winning the first four points and holding a 5-1 lead at the changeover. U-M slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually getting a match point at 9-8 that was staved off. The Wolverines converted their second match point opportunity when Vanderbilt double faulted, sending Brown and Miller to the second round.
The Wolverines were eliminated in the next round, ending the fall season for this trio.
U-M has five players in action this weekend (Nov. 3-5) at the ASU Thunderbird, which will conclude the fall season for the entire team.
